I'm a biology major and I plan to go to medical school and perhaps get my PhD in a biological science to do research. I'm finishing up calc 2 this semester, should I continue on to take more math classes? is it worth it? Apparently the next math class i'd take is what "real math" is. here's its description.

The course
This course covers the elements of logic, set theory, number theory, mathematical induction, functions, relations, operations, and combinatorics; and other topics in discrete mathematics as time permits. Beyond this subject matter, the goal of the course is to learn how to think like a mathematician and how to write proofs.

What about biological computer science?

kind of off topic but i always imagine my calc 2 TA as the one writing these kinds of posts lol he's such an autist

More math is always better. That sounds like an intro to proofs class which will let you see math in a different way. I say go for it, you have nothing to lose as long as you apply yourself.

>hurr hurr the only reason people take le biology is because they are le bad at le math XDDD am i cool yet??
fucking kill yourself you piece of shit

take the course because it's good for you. You'll learn to think in a new way. Also, try and get a good grade because grad school admissions people (not premed, but PhD) jizz themselves over people with real analysis and above level math. Seriously, if you look at professors, many more than you would expect actually majored in math in addition to or instead the field they now research.

95% of /sci/ will tell you to take it for the love of math.

However, you're never going to use those skills in any of your science classes. Odds are, your time would be better spent getting good grades on your bio/chemistry courses. If you have extra time, maybe look into the subject as a hobby or take the class pass/fail.

/sci/ doesn't even have 95 users

it's useless
take an extra bio/chem/biochem class instead

If you're planning on med school I see no reason to take more math. If you want to do a phd then taking more math could be beneficial. Who knows, maybe you'll love math and go on to do mathematical biology.

probably a bio major because otherwise you would know 19/20=95%

Why do you even say that? If you think that learning things is only about "what you need" can just go suck on the bottom of a slime pond

No homo but who is the guy in OPs picture. I want this man to play me if there is a movie about me.

I don't believe in only learning things for what you need. However, especially since he plans med-school, I think the coursework relevant to his major will be demanding enough as it is.

I'm a chemical engineer and I find astronomy very interesting. But I simply can't afford to load up an astronomy course on top of an already fairly demanding course load. So I still learn about it, just as a hobby instead.

I just think it's more important that OP uses his time effectively rather than bite off more than he can chew when it's not necessary. Notice I recommended for him to take it pass/fail or as a hobby if he had the time?
