I use vim and gvim for sure. Being a schemer I'm sure I could get something out of emacs but it never seems worth the effort.

No.
You see, scientists make a point of keeping up with the latest theories and such.
Ancient books like these have mostly been disproven and abandoned in favour of more modern, correct ideas

I just downloaded SICP tonight, plan to start reading it for fun tomorrow. About time I got a good foundational understanding of CS.

This.

Taking the 6.00x course on EdX right now and tried to do SICP concurrently.

Jesus fucking christ it's hard. It's not necessarily even the concepts, it's just the exercises are fucking brutal. It doesn't help that they are all, every single one of them, math exercises.

Augh, stop getting my hopes up, I don't want to start reading it and be disappointed. I'd rather be pleasantly surprised.

I find SICP very fascinating.

The exercises could be hard, but I think they are very effective to make you understand the subject.

Anyway, watch the MIT lectures and anything will be more clear:

i find programming language in general hard to learn simply because I don't have something in mind that I want to create. it is something you can only learn by doing, and not just reading. . . . . .

being a professional hacker is so badass and so much money to be made (legally)
