Question for you, /sci/. Why aren't there weapons such as katanas being made out of two of the strongest metals, iron and steel? It seems as if it would solve the problem of breakage.

"Katanas are traditionally from a specialized Japanese steel called "Tamahagane",[25] which is created from a traditional smelting process that results in several, layered steels with different carbon concentrations."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katana#Forging_and_construction

Steel is an alloy of iron and other elements, principally carbon. When carbon is the primary alloying element, its content in the steel is between 0.002% and 2.1% by weight. The following elements are always present in steel: carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, and traces of oxygen, nitrogen and aluminum. Alloying elements intentionally added to modify the characteristics of steel are: manganese, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, boron, titanium, vanadium and niobium.[1]

trolling or just incredibly stupid?

What about sapphire katana? Maybe it can also oscillate/vibrate for extra cutting action.

Do you think it could cut through a tank? What would be more fragile? steel or sapphire? I know sapphire is harder but steel is more ductile.

Diamond is not a metal, and it is not even the hardest material known to man.
Lonsdaleite is harder.

Osmium is not the hardest metal, it's the densest.

The hardest metal is probably chromium.
