I'm thinking of trying to teach myself the A Level (stage before university in the UK) maths syllabus. Am I best buying the course books from the internet or paying for learning materials from a distance learning provider?

Has anybody here taught themselves a complete course and done well at the exams?

I self taught myself Further Maths, and effectively normal maths as well due to my awful teachers. Literally just buy yourself the standard books for your exam board and do the exercises from that. And when the time comes for exams just download past exam papers off the internet. I got an A* in further and an A in straight if it helps

I also taught myself maths and further maths AS/A2. In 6 months no less.

Edexcel books are a bit odd, so maybe not best to teach yourself with. I would maybe do OCR.

Way to learn is to do every exercise ever. Then every past paper. Then do them again.

Thank you. Did you do Maths and F Maths concurrently, or one at a time? Which way would you recommend?

um, i would probably do two tracks concurrently, though track 1 is bigger, so apportion your time.

track 1 C1 - C4, FP1 - FP3
track 2 M, S and D units of your choice

if you intend to maths or a hard science make sure track 2 is mostly M units

I studied A2 Maths at the same time as both AS and A2 further. I'd recommend doing atleast C1 maybe even C2 before starting FP1, and doing C3 and C4 at the same time as FP2 and FP3. The optional modules can be done whenever in my personal opinion

I'd also recommend doing atleast D1, S1 and M1, and then choosing your other modules after that. I did S1, D1, M1, M2, M3 and M4 as my optional modules as I'm studying Physics at the moment

In my opinion, the MEI online resources is probably enough to teach yourself A-Level maths.

here's some MEI nuggets from the specification

1.7 SPIRITUAL, MORAL, ETHICAL, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ISSUES

1.8 ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION, EUROPEAN DIMENSION AND HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES

the curriculum is fine, especially having a module just on DEs, but they dress it up with such hippy shit
