Wouldn't it make sense for us to build a high earth orbit satellite, put wikipedia on it's hard-drive and leave it there instead of all this gay-ass "time capsule" shit people do?

Shield that bitch.

Sure, the logical thing would be to put it on earth somewhere, but there are two problems with this:

1. Not readily found by future civs.
2. Destroyed in WW III.

What for?
Wikipedia, an encyclopedia of everything, would not be interesting at all if we looked at it decades later because we already learn about it in our subjects and would still be learning about it provided schools exist. Time capsules, on the other hand, contain items and messages that cannot be taught and will hold sentimental value (the law of sentimental inflation allows for this) in the years to come particularly to the ones who know about it. I wouldn't give two flying fucks if I dug up the time capsule of someone else simply because I wouldn't understand the meaning of the items inside.
Now, sending out a record of Wikipedia into space for potential civilizations to find, on the other hand, nahh, that's a dumb idea as well.

>wasting resources on this sentimental shite
Put a energy station in orbit that directs concentrated sunlight at a collector on the surface of earth. That would be worth far more.

oh wait

It's actually very efficient to focus energy down to Earth. The biggest problem would be misusing the system as a weapon or accidentally flying through the beam.

Solar flares don't damage spacecraft. CMEs can but there is no such thing as and x-class CME.
