A male in mid 30s came with severe lacerations in his groin. I mean flesh was seriously torn off from the poor guy. The story was that he was drunk and riding his motorcycle at 90 mph. Well, one thing led to the next and he got a major road burn. Too make matters worse, he wasn't wearing a shirt or anything( not that it would've done anything anyways). But yeah everything was just hanging. After 5 hours of surgery he made it out ok. That was like my third surgery on the job.

It depends what you do. I went to a school with a very strong reputation in geology and did my MS in a coterm (extra year after undergrad), plus did basically a minor and a half in CS, which I highly recommend. Geology is moving towards computers a lot right now. At that point, I knew my shit well enough and had the required degrees (MS is the typical working degree, with a BS you do more work in the field, have longer days, and lower pay) to land a great petroleum job in Houston. Not the best city in Texas, but after a year or two I'll be able to move to the Austin office. Smaller office = more responsibility, so they don't want fresh hires working there right away.

It's not the easiest job, but it's not horrendous. My day starts anywhere from 6 to 9, depending on if I'm in the office or visiting a field site but usually ends by 5 or 6 and I don't take work home unless I want to for whatever reason. You won't enjoy it unless you really love geology, since that's all you do all day, but I love being able to actually use SCIENCE in my job as opposed to applying science to engineering.

I did a BS geology and have more recently studied anatomy just because I like paleontology.

the easiest way to do what I do is probably go hire on with the smallish contractor of your choice, learn everything you can about all aspects of operations, and then go start a company of your own.

I bought an existing company that was really small, and the previous owner spent a month training the hell out of me. Then I grew the business. However I have a strong background in business management, and had the means to buy a cheap but promising business. Most people probably won't get that opportunity.

I do in fact hold a couple million dollars in business equity, but I don't make my money off of cash investments.

A million or two in invested capital will never make you the kind of money I gross unless like myself you take on great risk and actively produce new capital.

Investors invest millions to make thousands. Business owners invest thousands to make millions.
