Alright, /sci/, I have a question. Don't call me dumb or anything, I'm just curious. so I'm running, and I throw a ball. The ball therefore (temporarily) travels faster than me. What if I'm running at 99.999999(you get the point)% of the speed of light and I throw this ball. Assuming I'm in a perfect vacuum.

It doesn't go faster than the speed of light. Lorentz transform.

You already are, in one reference frame.

So, throw a ball and see what happens.

Basic relativity. Einstein had the same thought experiment as OP, but with a car and headlights. This is the problem with the science education in basic schools- they teach idiotic things like V1+V2=V3 and then "April Fools!" in late high school / college. It's like teaching kids that the earth is flat until they're 20, and then breaking it softly. BS.

2. He didn't imply that. He was just asking what would happen.

The formula, which has been tested rigorously, says an object will never go past the speed of light.

Didn't specify the force that you threw the ball with. So, if you had thrown the ball with a force equivalent to .0000009% the speed of light, the ball moves at 99.9999999% the speed of light.

Nice try though.

what do you want them to do, whack the kids with relativity at age 11?
we have enough trouble getting people interested in science as it is. it's more important for people to care about the subject than it is for them to know about it.

technically OP is talking about going double the speed of light... so...

Yes. Kids are smart. They can handle the truth. It's adults that can't handle it these days.

Not the original guy, but I actually think we should. The fact that all of the physics we teach does not actually fit reality in the end, may be what's contributing to people not caring about it.
