1. Africa is a very big place - what is true of one part is not necessarily representative.
2. African countries are not generally the most stable or affluent places in the world - places with widespread suffering and poverty lead to resentment, hatred and fear. These in turn lead to the sort of horrible situations that you're talking about.

The last time the methane rose was during the Permian-Triassic extinction 205 million years ago.
This, combined with ocean acidification, spells ecological collapse and loss of carrying capacity. We have a lot of things to worry about.
