Because his achievements are dramatically overstated by the media who purposefully use buzzwords like prodigy and genius to sell a silly human interest story. He has not achieved anything special:

IUPUI is a low-tier school, and younger students getting a head start on their education is hardly unheard of. He's also used as PR for the school, and his research was hardly his own.

The process he is going through (investigation) doesn't mean he is smarter than the people who are famous for the initial work.
But reporters wrote that he found flaws in Einstein's theories, rather than just write that he didn't understand enough of it yet.

I don't hate him OP. He's clearly very smart. I think he's got potential. I also think he needs to cool his jets and keep his head down until he's in a better position to start trying to make contributions to science.

He's not doing himself any favors by going on Glenn Beck and doing TED talks about how he's making huge contributions to physics before he has:
a) Actually made huge contributions to physics
b) Finished his education, so he's up to date on what ground needs breaking.

I'm not mad, but I am jelly. I skimmed through his "TEDxTeen" talk, and honestly it seemed like A) He knew exactly what he was talking about, and B) It would probably have been quite interesting to watch, if I had bothered with the point he was trying to make.

People just hate him because they're jealous, and, as you said, he seems smug. But of course he's gonna be proud (as you also said); I don't hold that against him. In fact I think he's not even trying to show off mostly; he just wants to share his enjoyment of various things.

It's stupid to say he's not achieved anything, as some people appear to assume, I mean - here's a video of 12-year-old-him bascially teaching a bunch of second year college students how to math: watch?v=0h7qQ--VxOo

The media took it too far in saying he's "working on disproving" this and that, though. For one thing, you /can't/ disprove anything in physics without actually testing something experimentally, unless you find an inconsistency in an established theory, which obviously is not going to happen with GE (which is what people say he's planning on "disproving"). At least, it's not gonna happen any time soon.

But the media are obviously gonna do that, so who gives a fuck? I look forward to catching up with the guy when he gets older, but it's quite possible that he'll simply be just like every other scientist working today, the only difference being that he got there earlier. Still, I'd be one helluva proud mom, if he was my son.
