Are humans the only animals that find the smell of excrement disgusting? Cats and dogs have no problems trying to eat their own crap and vomit, and monkeys happily handle their own. Why are humans the exception?

humans have historically disliked anything that reminds them of their primitive origins because for a long time the idea that they shared lineage with chimpanzees either disgusted or didn't occur to them

I believe it's socially learned behavior

it's not that you find all excrements disgusting, it's that you find the smell of stale excrement disgusting. this is because you don't know how long it's been there, and is most likely full of harmful microbes.
excrement has nutritional value in it, so long as it's still fresh it's not that harmful to you. i bet you never see a dog eating old excrement, only fresh that they just saw produced

I know of some species of birds that will deliberately not shit near their own nests. Puffins even dig special holes to hide their shit in. It's because they don't want to attract predators, not because of any sense of cleanliness.

Humans only find the scent of excrement disgusting if they're raised to find it so.

In many cultures, it is common to eat feces, particularly from attractive young people, though it is usually considered a private matter and not spoken of. Parents will go out and buy feces from members of the community who they hope their children to be like, and feed it to them.

Western doctors who specialize in intestinal disorders often bemoan the fact that they can't get their patients to regularly partake of this healthful habit, which is a natural part of the behavior of all animals and is essential to maintain a healthy intestinal flora.
