what's /sci/'s issue with engineers?

i'm a senior software engineer for a major fortune 500, make just under $137k/yr, and live a great life.

science and engineering go hand in hand...engineering is essentially the practical application of science. what gives? you /sci/fags really have that bad of a superiority complex? have fun being a fucking lab rat at a university with your useless degree, whilst my engineering background gives me a great job with a great salary with great benefits.

with science, engineering doesn't exist. with engineering, science is useless. deal with it.

Most of the people here are highschool babbys whining about things they don't know. To answer your question, though, it's because so many of the engineerfags post things like you just did, gloating about their pay without actually having any frame of reference for what pure science degrees do in modern industry.

Burn your soapbox if you want a legitimate answer, and stop fucking asking questions that are laced with "lol u mad" shit.

typical /sci/fag response.

i completely understand the importance and benefits of science. but that doesn't make it any more superior to engineering.

HAHA, engineers don't go hand in hand. You're a douche, engineers barely understand any science, they just memorize shit out of text books and don't even understand the depths of what they're doing just so they can past their exams. We enjoy research, that's why we do it, post-doc physicists can get employed at the bank any day and earn 5-10x your salary. We do what we do since we enjoy it, asshole.

>> No.5182982

>>5182954
I never said that it was superior. Both fields are incredibly important and rely on one another immensely. I'm just saying that there are far too many engineers that don't respect the intertwining of disciplines.

Here again, you're assuming that scifags are up in arms because they believe that they're superior. While those dipwads exist, they're the vocal majority (which is never a true representation).

Don't take such a defensive stance or a /b/ attitude.

>> No.5183012

OP,
Although some of your argument is, to some extant, true, the counteratguement, (especially when considering Physicists vs. Engineering), is that an engineer will practically never understand the true complexity of math and science, and how far more there is to know, and one wouldn't normally be able to take it on. The power of knowledge outweighs anything. It seems that for most engineers, the amount of money that's involved in engineering is vast, and that's all they really aim for, rather than actually being satisfied of your work.
But I'm pretty sure, you're gonna bitch and be in denial, and say, "hurr durr, I can take on math/physics"

>> No.5183022

>>5183012
i understand the power of knowledge. what i'm saying is, it's simple a different type of knowledge.

for instance, you (for simplicity sake) know much more about the facets of science than i do, however, i know much more about the process of software architecting and engineering than you.

we're not "better" than the other, just different.

>> No.5183038

Why do people on this board assume engineers memorize equations and don't do shit? Most of the ChemE's in my class do research on campus, and we learn the science behind things in order to apply it. An engineer who doesn't know what's going on is a shitty engineer

>> No.5183031

>>5183012
Not OP, but us engineers have our own masters and PhDs. We perform our own research, write our own papers and further our own fields.

Saying that we "will practically never understand the true complexity of math and science" is meaningless, because it can be readily countered by the statement that scientists and mathematicians will never understand the beauty and complexity of a truly efficient and completely practical structure or system in any sense beyond numbers on a page.

Science and engineering are different sides of the same coin. We have the same basis, but different goals.

>> No.5183041

Do software engineers actually find their job interesting or are they in it just for the money?

I'm currently reading Software Engineering A Practitioner's Approach by Roger S. Pressman. I mean, how much of the shit in that horrid text book is actually used? I swear it can be condensed into a few statements:

>Understand what the client wants
>Identify and mitigate risks
>Plan the software before implementing it
>Test and evaluate your software

Models for this and that, barrages of acronyms, and diagrams for every little thing makes me think software engineers are trying to make their job seem harder than it really is.

>> No.5183051

>>5183041
i started young (6th grade?) out of interest, then i wanted to pursue it more for the money, but i can honestly say i enjoy my fucking job so much.

>Models for this and that, barrages of acronyms, and diagrams for every little thing makes me think software engineers are trying to make their job seem harder than it really is.

The sad part is that you KNOW there are ton of your classmates that are in the "C's get Degrees" crowd. They don't apply themselves, won't do research, and will end up sitting at some control panel in a plant for the next 35 years instead of developing their science and expanding their horizons.

Well they are in fact different, but both are immensely needed.
I myself, am tired of this rivalry. I'm a physics major, and most of my friends are engineers. Yes, physics is a lot fucking harder.
In the end, engineers are needed to advance earth in many aspects, while physicists are needed for the searching of answers in the universe; for example, the origin of man. You may think that's nothing big, IMO, it depends of the person. I'm majoring in physics because before I age and die, I want to understand the world and beyond the starts, and discover the answers of the most complex questions. Knowledge to me, is a fucking gift. Knowledge is power.

what's /sci/'s issue with differential equations?

i'm a third order differential equation with no general solution, make no sense to ~99.5% of the population, and live life in quiet complexity.

Btw, it's not really true that engineering wouldn't exist without science. Engineering started as the art of building war machines, it was only linked to science from the XVIIIth century.

Hey Faggots,
My name is Felix, and I hate every single one of you. All of you are nerdy, asexual no-lifes who spend every second of their day fiddling with stupid ass test tubes. You are everything bad in the world. Honestly, have any of you ever worked in industry? I mean, I guess it’s fun making up convoluted theories because of your own obsession with the physical universe, but you all take to a whole new level. This is even worse than jerking off to academic journals by PhDs.
Don’t be a stranger. Just hit me with your best shot. I’m pretty much perfect. I was head engineer of NSU, and a Nazi engineer designing parts for fucking fighter planes. What trade do you practice, other than “run experiments in a controlled environment in perfect compliance with the scientific method”? I also get contracts from Mercedes and Mazda, and have a banging hot engine (She just blew a tip seal; Shit was SO cash). You are all faggots who should just kill yourselves. Thanks for listening.

Think about the origins of the word "engine." Nowadays it refers to a motor, but in the past, it referred to the powered element of a train, and before that to labor-simplifying machines such as the cotton gin... but well before all of that, it referred to catapults, battering rams and other siege engines.

Personally, I don't really want to know how much there is yet to learn.
The point of being an engineer is learning enough about physics and maths to apply them to everyday (and sometimes, extraordinary) problems, then finding a way to solve them.

I don't need to know quantum physics to develop / build / maintain big-ass factory machines.

I'm grateful to you guys for figuring out all the stuff you figure out though.
And you have to admit, without engineering you'd be just as screwed as we would be without scientists. We'd have no basis for what we do, and you'd lack the equipment to conduct experiments.
