The higher you go, the less air there is, but the less the pull of the gravity of earth has as well. But lessening gravity is tiny compared to the lessening/lack of air resistance

Basically, air is what keeps you from constantly accelerating when free-falling. He's going to be so high up that the air has very little effect on him, thus the belief that he can get fast enough to break the sound barrier
