OP here. I definitely feel that having a group like this is in everybody's self interest. It doesn't really matter what they believe so long as you can, for example, sleep on a fellow congregation member's couch if you get kicked out of your apartment, or they probably offer events with free food if you can't afford food, etc.

Mainly, the purpose of the congregation will be to provide a kind of social safety net, where if your life goes to shit one day (which is an inevitability) and you get laid off, can't afford rent, etc., you'll have someplace to go with someone you can trust.
