How can science and meaning of life go hand in hand?

Science is only about methodology, now about actual purpose. I always imagined (hardcore) scientists to be cold motherfuckers in this regard.

Do any of you /sci/ freaks ever put much thought and interest in the 'purpose' of our existence and the universe, as opposed to the material shit and what the process of life is like?

People who think too overly 'logical' annoy the fuck out of me. Logic is only declared within our limited brains.

Thoughts?

Your first mistake is in presuming that there is a purpose.

How can you be so sure there is none?

Arrogance of left brainers. Ugh.

That's because you're dumb.

No, it's because my superior intellect permits me to look beyond the borders your left brain set up for you.

Checkmate, fucking nerd.

You can't say for or against when it comes to this subject matter, so it's futile to ponder until our technology allows for us to expand our knowledge of the universe and it's mechanisms.

Maybe we're just not whiny little ass faces that feel like they need some sort of purpose or meaning to justify their crap-laden existence. I create my own meaning and purpose for my own life, and don't presume that I can project those ideas onto the existence of the universe as a whole, because that's a stupid idea.

The fundamental idea of science is that we can't say that something is true without going and looking to see. There's no way you can do this with your phony baloney concept of "meaning," so it is indeed outside the purview of science.

I have a fun little test for you: please put "the meaning of existence" into clearly defined terms for us. What are you even looking for? Do you even know?

Not him, but a friend of mine always throws the word "spirit" and "conscious" around when debating purpose and reality, and when I ask him to define those terms, I never get a clear answer. Usually I'll get a "read into the material" and be referenced to a book allegedly containing the subject matter. I decided to read one the other day out of morbid curiosity (The Cosmic Serpent by a Dr. Jeremy Narby) and it was full of pseudo-scientific shit and vaguely defined terms as points of argument, on top of some very poorly done biology. The point is, these people don't seem to have a grasp on what it is they believe in, however it's very rooted in loose mysticism, a larger than life viewpoint, and a misunderstanding of scientific concepts. It's rather sad seeing as how their determination could be put to better use.
