ITT: post as much as possible and/or discuss any kind of rumor which is known to be false(ill-founded/fake theory) or conspiracy which rapes science

me first
ill-founded/fake:
>8 cups of water a day
>brand higgs boson as god particle
>i love how cokacola linkage anything energetic(eg. soccer, teenager) with it
>red bull gives you wing, energy drink
>

rumors/consipracy:
>global warming (ok i'm stupid, i really don't know if it's a serious issue)
>soft science (eg. marketing is now science)
>psychology, social science (well, almost all of it)

>> No.4987931

>red bull gives you wing

Are you serious?

>> No.4987942

OP, I drank red bull once and I got these weird stunted wings growing out my shoulders.

it's an example, you don't think it's serious but in fact the overwhleming advertisement makes you(or most average Joe) immediately presume energy drink is better/worth the price

>> No.4987951

>soft science

If something uses scientific methods, it's a science. Deal with it.

The only legitimate question is how reliable and predictive the data is (or is it "are"?).

>energy drink is worth the price

That depends on the objective.

>Things like "depression", "psychopathy" are hard categories and not clusters of correlated symptoms.

People have an outdated notion of science where everything can be put into neat categories and these categories have a lot of explanatory power.

In real life, psychologists make observations that many different symptoms tend to be correlated, and so they cluster correlated symptoms into categories that they call things like "bipolar", "depression" and "psychopathy". A very useful endeavor in my opinion, but nothing like the "you might be depressed if..." that you see in the mainstream media. And that's not even getting into "chemical imbalances"

>Deal with it.
you're right
but most people think science as some sort of certainty like logic/math, which is not the case, soft science in particular,
i think it's quite easy to see the problem base on the root words of the theory they use
maybe i should rephrase the problem, or should we move our battlefield to think more about vaildity and conceptually give no special position for science(say, think of it as a rumor which nature instead of people says it's true) but it's impossible....

i would feel better if it's solely mass media's fault

>>4987998
Yeah you are right, even though the misconceptions are mostly seen in the mass media, they are intentionally perpetuated by the profession and many practitioners seem to believe them also (probably not researchers)

Are you fucking retarded? You don't believe in global warming? Why the fuck are you on a science board?

Why are YOU on a science board? Keep your "beliefs" in the church. Science deals with facts, evidence and logic.

OP here. Haha got you! I was only pretending to be retarded!
