Plus, Javier is wrong, OP. He's using the solution x=3 presumably to check whether it's a root of the quadratic, but of course it isn't. His factorization is wrong. The discriminant of the quadratic is negative, so in fact it is prime and does not factor over the reals.

If P(x) is a polynomial and P(a)=0, then x-a divides P(x). In the case of quadratics you only check for at most two roots since by the fundamental theorem of algebra, the number of linear factors in a polynomials factorization is bounded by the degree of the polynomial.
