Personally I think that's a wonderful way to look at it. The way energy and entropy work in the universe unifies us all in a fundamental way, we are all made of the same stuff and we all return back to it after we die. Understanding how this works and thinking accordingly is a fantastic thing.

Why are you bothering to explore Mars if not to use it to make more Humans? Commonly called "colonization"?

Really, you need to stop with the static that roars through your head, quiet that down, and ask yourself:

"Why do we do anything?"

We DO STUFF, so that we can make MORE HUMANS. There's no other purpose to Human activity. And all this probe crap to a PLACE WHERE HUMANS CAN LIVE, doesn't serve the purpose of actually LIVING THERE.

We're STUCK in a self-destructive paradigm. It's like we're in pre-colonial Europe, and we keep making plans to send probes across the Atlantic instead of GOING THERE AS PEOPLE.

Sagan is the main reason why I made my life changing decision to give up my art major and sacrifice my life to science.

Humans control probes. Every action is thought out by people on Earth and then communicated to the probe, which then tentatively carries it out. Just look at the pace Spirit and Oppy have progressed. Humans on the surface of Mars could have suited up and done everything all the rovers have done thus far in a single day. Curiosity isn't even intended to move more than 30 meters a day!

When it is doing something in an area then it spends a long time in that area, not just hours, days. When it is moving between interesting sites, it is intended to only move 30 meters a day because they don't want it driving across the surface itself. They give it instructions for a short distance, wait, receive and analyze the data, and then send more instructions.

Curiosity doesn't, why would humans? The samples are taken and the explorer (be it human or robotic) moves on. The astronauts wouldn't be doing the actual data analyzing, Curiosity sure doesn't, they would just take the samples, put it in the machine, and move on.
