hey /sci/ i have a question for you:
would it be possible to create transgenic glowing humans by implanting the luciferase gene (the gene that allows fireflies to glow) on a zygote? they already did it with a tobacco plant and it worked

They've made a wide range of glowing animals over the years. The only barrier to doing it on humans is ethics.

>mfw Ameritarded Christians ban such research because LOOSIFAAH GENE AWWW HEELLL NAWW

>> No.4883303

Yes, it's entirely doable. No one will do it if they are accountable to traditional funding sources, or care about repercussions on their career.

The first genetic engineering of humans will be to cure debilitating genetic diseases. That's the only way to make the first instances of it palatable to the public. Frivolous shit like making little Johnny glow is unethical. It harms the kid (by making him a freak that can't integrate into human society effectively). Yeah, it's the fault of cruel and ignorant people, but it would happen.

Genetically modifying someone so they fucking glow is a blatant human rights violation.

Oh holy shit, this would actually happen.

no it isnt, what if they choose it?
some fucker obviously would, it'd make them famous to be the first glowie

Doubt it - even with our fanatical religious zealots, we've still managed to out-science the rest of the world put together

I must find a way to secretly implant this gene into my future kid

They cant choose with current technology, as OP stated its done on a zygote.

And even if they were an adult, it permanently alters the genes of all of that persons kids and his kids kids, and essentially adds foreign genes into the entire human gene pool.

This goes way beyond the child abuse of naming your kid something that guarantees he will be murdered by sixth graders.

You could just not alter gamete-producing cells. If you're going to alter the cells of an adult, do you really need ALL of them to glow?

What would be the utility of having such a human being?

Exploring what can and can't be (has or has not been) done. Are you okay with the knowledge that there has never been a genetically modified glowing human being, when there might be able to be?

If you already know who your enemies are, that would be a waste of time.

The exact same argument applies equally well to every kind of mutilation imaginable.

Are you okay with the knowledge that there has never been a genetically modified faceless human being, when there might be able to be?

If there is no benefit in having a glowing human, then I'm fine with not having a glowing human.

heheh, yeah
to be honest, theres probably no practical use for this.

Science isn't about why; it's about why not.

And here's why not: all the deformed and dead babies inevitably created on accident while trying to create this glowing human.

>> No.4883378

Are there actually people in here seriously proposing that we NOT make a glowing human?

>> No.4883428

>>4883378
I don't see the point of letting a glowing human grow to term. We can know if the gene is expressed while it's still an embryo, the person who had to grow up with it would live a hard life and it just seems pointless.

they've done it with chimps already

>> No.4883457

It is highly unethical to do it on a human when they're a fetus. Unless you're a corrupt scientist, ethics and morality should always be a factor.
