You know absolutely nothing about astro physics.

This might create some problems but we will probably pull through it. Our power plants are being secured against this as we speak. The main problem is power lines since we can't really secure those.

Read NASAs posts about this, they pretty much sum it up.

Oh and this has happened twice in the past 22 years

Does anyone here actually believe that we are perhaps in imminent danger and that maybe we will see the beginning of a decline in 2012 that will ultimately lead to the extinction or near extinction of the human race?

If so, do you have any desire to dry and prove that it is so with your famed math and science?

I would tend to agree with you, I find it highly unlikely that we will become extinct anytime soon, I feel this way mainly because of the sheer quantity of humans on this planet.

our civilizations have existed for a few thousand years.

we're killing off species that have been here half a billion years.

we aren't winning shit.

but we also aren't going extinct. We can survive almost anything in smallish numbers.

this still leaves me wondering if we will exhaust our resources bringing about our own demise, faster then could have ever been anticipated. Some do argue that we are destroying our own habitat, my question is, how will we adapt this time?

Just for the record, I do believe 'something' is around the corner. But I am not sure what scale this falls on.

are you suggesting that nuclear power plants DONT need electricity supplied from circuit boards to maintain cooling functions?

If a solar flare melted wiring and circuitry, like they did in 1859, there will be no power to keep the fuel rods cool.

Most of nuclear engineering anymore it seems, is spent on nuclear safety. I am going to go ahead and assume that with such powerful reactors, their control hardware most likely contains a.) a backup power supply b.) a system of transformers, diodes, and rectifiers between them and the control circuitry and the loads.
If this assumption is true, worst case scenario would be an overall open system with the control circuit being fried. There are manual controls as well in order to prevent a meltdown. Modern reactors wouldn't even be of worry in that scenario though.
Also, good to see someone else has looked at the after-effects of Chernobyl. Despite being abandoned by human life, it flourishes with other natural species.

Enough information for me to sage. Scaremongering bullshit news channel.
The solar cycle is notoriously unpredictable I bet that for every solar scientist that is predicting a large solar outburst in 12 months there is one saying all will be normal and one saying activity will be below normal. I am not up to date with the solar modelling accuracy but I did a google search for solar cycle prediction. NASA was the top result. Image is from that top result page. So Fox again is the news source of the retarded.
