it came from a fusion of Earth made of ice vs Earth made of lava. The remainder was the moon

Actually I have been informed by several sources which I believe to be reliable that over half the water from earth has come from the asteroids which hit it in it's initial formation. The earth went through a period of being bombarded with such asteroids a very long time ago I have been led to believe. Asteroids contain a significant amount of frozen water. You could go on to ask where that water came from, and that I believe is what others are getting at. Fascinating stuff.

>> No.4793954

there are theories that a substantial portion came from very large comets way back when.....

Asteroids and large bodies generally hold a lot of water, but it can be summed up to the violent but somewhat simple reaction between H2 gas and O2 in the presence of some sort of energy (fire for instance). If you had a balloon filled with hydrogen and put a flame to it, that reaction takes place with the surrounding O2 in the atmosphere, from there imagine it on a large scale and you've got quite an abundance.

Are there pockets of water vapor closer to the core of the Earth from when it was being impacted during its early stages of formation? Or would the escape velocity have been too small at the time to sustain atmospheric gases?

Ohhhh.

So water is made of hydrogen and helium. I had it wrong all these years!

Ignoring the whole "ooo ancient aliens" thing, this provides some interesting insight into early earth.
