So what the opinions of this board about the mission to start an almost self-sustaining community on Mars?

I for one, would like to apply.

Besides the fame, living the rest of your life in a porta potty in a desert would suck dick. Also their estimates are way off for arrival, and they have no means of funding.
Look at their team. There's four fucking people, and only one (the physicist) who can actually contribute. Pitiful.

As opposed to living in a porta potty in your mother's basement?

At least the scenery on Mars is better.

Just like SpaceX, it's a bait and switch scheme to get into history books.

Musk knows he's going to fail, just like he did with tesla motors. It doesn't matter, people will say it was a conspiracy or whatever, he'll be immortalized just for trying.

Oh, but i'm evil, i'm scum for even suggesting or thinking that commercial space won't pan out.

Just like commercial airship travel. they built a mooring tower into the empire state building! Airship travel is here to stay.

It is very interesting I think. But it is a very drastic change to your life if you choose to go.
You would really apply for this and give up all of your earthly pleasures? All contact with your friends and family, to live in a lonely and hostile environment?
It would be a very brave and selfless thing, and crucial to the progress of mankind.

I am in favour of a self sustaining community on Mars, but I for one would not want to be the one to actually go there.

>> No.4770559

Holy cow. I didn't know about this. This is awesome.

I'm volunteering as sure as fuck for this. If they don't accept me the first time, I'll be applying every two years until I reach the age limit if any.

If the destiny of mankind was written in a book with SCI FI labeled on the spine.

It's not. Mars is a waste of time. There are no resources and Ceres and Vespa would make a better base.

But mankind doesn't care about the future or space. We'd be there if we did. Maybe when everyone has jobs they'll be able to think about tomorrow, but everyone is stuck in the right now.

It will be a great achievement to be able to create a self sustaining base anywhere. Mars, or Ceres or Vespa will all be great achievements for mankind.

The Earths lifespan is finite. The only way for humans to be able to outlive the earth will be to colonise new worlds.
Luckily, there is still a very large amount of time left for us to be able to do this.

I'm going to apply but they probably won't accept me. I also think this is a stupid plan. Maybe not the plan itself, but for sure the business aspect. Not as retarded as Elon Musk of SpaceX, the hugest faggot in the private space industry. Fucking hate that guy. "Oh I know a way that we can make manned missions to Mars and back for only $500M but I won't tell you till next year." What a joke. Anyone who thinks ANY currently planned manned Mars mission will come to fruition is a retard.

We have the technology to make one-way trips there and establish colonies, but no one wants to fund it because there is no profit. I'm looking forward to seeing what China does in the future. Maybe I'll learn Mandarin and go work for them. NASA is dead.

I don't watch this scene around private space stuff very closely, but Elon Musk seems to deliver on his promises, no?

Why is he
>the hugest faggot in the private space industry
?

I haven't heard about that $500M round trip to Mars promise, but I assume it's true. The question is, why would he lie? He won't get money from any sort of Mars mission (as far as I understand, SpaceX will be making money from ferrying stuff to orbit), so lying about something like this would be like childish boasting. Surely he's outgrown that (or not?).

>but Elon Musk seems to deliver on his promises, no?

Where's that sub-20k electric car? Tesla Motors was his abortion, after all.

>inb4 evil conspiracy kept the hero down

Why would he lie? Because he'll be in the history books now as one of the pioneers of space travel, even if his business completely folds. Just like he'll be remembered for Tesla, even though that's a total failure.

He's just a self-centered billionaire who wanted his legacy to be more than just "that paypal guy"

He should be publicly flogged for setting up so many people's hopes.

But then again, people should realize that these billionaires aren't creating the future. they're just spending money to force it to look, in appearance only, like we're in the space age.

>Because he'll be in the history books
Seems quite... shallow. But maybe you're right. Time will show.

Tesla is a failure, yes, but the recent launches shown that they could get to orbit more cheaply than anyone else. At least he (or, rather, SpaceX's ex-NASA engineers) delivered on that.

I wouldn't discard him completely just yet.

>> No.4770647

In my opinion, private space agencies should be focussing on a way to make space profitable. Once they can do that, then investors will be scrambling to give them money. Asteroid mining comes to mind, but there is still a lot that needs to be developed before that can be done. Basically it all comes down to money. Space travel costs a buttload.

I think corporate sponsorship + advertising could work. Take money from large multinational companies like McDonalds, Coca-Cola, etc. to slap huge ads on the rockets and say "[Name of space program] sponsored by [name of company]" in every press release and media mention of the project. Companies would do it. They would pay. I would pay. I think it could work.

>> No.4770648

Sell rockets at extreme cost and make outlandish claims about fuel for heavy lift rockets?

People actually wanted to buy electric vehicles, there's a market for that. Only a handful of very wealthy corporations could afford rockets.

They will never break even and will continue to be solely supported by investors until even they give up and try to make a legacy somewhere else.

"Enlightened" is little more than a buzzword.

"According to their need" leads to "getting rid of people whose needs are greater". If you don't get that, perhaps you need to read something other than communist propaganda (You know, HISTORY, maybe?).

Nope, it means getting rid of people whose needs aren't outweighed by their potential contribution.

Speaking of which, as I canadian, I feel entitiled to comment on your obvious assumed moral high ground of a "functioning social democracy".

Not only do we (Canada) artificially inflate our standard of living on the backs of "undesirable" empoverished labour around the world, but we still haven't managed to find a way to make sure everybody contributes to their optimal potential.
