>Live records for multiple radiation monitoring stations near the border of Indiana and Michigan have shown radiation levels as high as 7,139 counts per minute (CPM). The level varied between 2,000 CPM and 7,000 CPM for several hours early this morning (EST).

>Normal radiation levels are between 5 and 60 CPM, and any readings above 100 CPM should be considered unusual and trigger an alert, according to information listed on the RadNet website (at EPA.gov)

It's >reddit, what do you expect?

It's an abnormal amount, but nothing dangerous. Probably being looked into to prevent a panic, not some big "coverup".

The media and masses get their panties in a huge knot over the word "radiation", despite it being mostly harmless in the lower levels.

counts per minute?

are we measuring radiation or trying to keep a good flow going while we dj?

this is the first time ive come to the science board, this is how you guys science, really?

It's a non-SI unit that gives very bad data for the strength of the source.
I wish they would list the becquerels. Oh wait, they probably don't know it.

divide it by 60 if you want Bq you idiot

CPM and Becquerels are not equivalently exchanged units you double homosexual.

Yeah, the counter measures EVERY decay, and ignores background radiation.

What the hell did you guys think would happen after fukushima? Levels would go down and the public would praise the government for its hard work?

Also It seems few really understand radiation, and how it effects us, both on this board and around the world. People toss the word radiation around and say low levels are harmless yada yada. What they don't understand is that if we are seeing elevated levels of radioactivity in the air here, it means we are getting BOMBARDED by most likely Iodine 131, elevated levels in the sea water? heavier isotopes (read Cesium 134 and 137)

If you know anything at all about this, then you understand, regardless of what we are being told or even what they know. NO GOOD can come of this.

It will be at least 20 years before we have any real idea of how bad it is/was. Problem is, there is JACK SHIT anybody can do about it.

Op you have seriously done no research on your own. There is a nuclear reactor who has admitted to a radiation leak of .1gpm or something. This number is so inconceivably small it poses no real risk. Nothing blew up and there was a slight leak from a pipe or something. Everything is fine.

Oh there was a leak at a plant recently, I honestly thought this thread was referring to Fukushima

oh well, nothing lost nothing gained.
