/sci/, I assume there are a fair few of you out there who are familiar with the Pauli Exclusion Principle?

Well, in Brian Cox's "A Night with the Stars" he implies that the PEP applies on a universal scale, as opposed to just an atomic one. He takes a diamond, rubs it to warm it up a little, and claims that as a result of his rubbing that all the electrons *in the universe* change their energy levels so as not to match those of the electrons in the diamond.

You can see it here, at 36 minutes in (I'm not sure if people outside of the UK can view iPlayer, so you'll just have to take my word for it if not)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b018nn7l/A_Night_with_the_Stars/

Does anyone else smell bullshit? Maybe he's considering the electrons' position in space to be part of the definition of their quantum state? If that's the case, then the PEP loses its meaning - it would imply that all the electrons in an atom could have identical quantum numbers but different positions and still make logical sense.

What do you guys think? Am I missing something?

OP is being a cock.
He is using the words Energy State rather than the more accurate Quantum State big fucking whoop.

tempting as it is to learn all physics to piss off brian cox, it's not worth it

but if he'd have said quantum state it would still be false... loads of electrons in the universe have the same quantum state. The Pauli Exclusion Principle states that no two electrons *in an atom* can have the same quantum state, not two electrons in the universe.

He dun goofed

No that is impossible.
>The Pauli Exclusion Principle states that no two electrons *in an atom* can have the same quantum state, not two electrons in the universe.
Nope you are wrong.
