I was doing SAT math problems for fun and encountered this problem. Just...what...there are like six semi-variables in here. This is a legit College Board question btw.

(x-8)(x-k)= x^2-5kx +m

In the equation above, k an m are constants. If the equation is true for all values of x, what is the value of m?

A: 8
B: 16
C: 24
D: 32
E: 40

>> No.4727751

x^2 -(8 + k)x + 8k = x^2-5kx + m

so (8+k) = 5k, meaning k = 2

and 16 = m

>> No.4727755

8k = m

-kx - 8x = -5kx
so
(-k-8) = -5k

You should be able to figure it out from there.

x^2 - 8x - kx + 8k = x^2-5kx +m
-8x - kx + 8k = -5kx + m
-8 - k = -5
k = 3

8k = m
3X8 = m
m = 24

>>4727751
erm, k is 3, not 2

here

is much quicker and easy to follow, logically. Kudos.

>> No.4727764

(x-8)(x-k) = (x-5y)(x-k)
(x-8) = x-5y
5m = 8
y = 8/5
(-5y)(-k) = m
m = 8k
Not sure how to get k...

except i dun goofed

EK is right

i dont think i am, thats why i deleted my post.

i'll try again

so -8-k = -5k
yeh, k is 2

m is still 8k, so its 16

yeah, what? How did you get -(8 + k)x

by multiplying out the brackets (or distributing parentheses as yanks say)

OOOOOOOOH okay you just do equation-based pattern recognition. Fuckin hate when dumb stuff like that gets me.

>If the equation is true for all values of x,

that is the clue. means all coefficients must be equal
