Is it worth my while to donate blood? I'm AB+, meaning universal receiver, but my blood can only be given to other AB+s.

I checked the national blood stock and there doesn't seem to be any shortage of my blood type. I am a universal plasma donor, but my nearest plasma donation centre is a long way away.

It is still worthwhile to do; everybodys blood is valuable.
They will give AB blood to AB patients if they can, whereas if there is not enough, they will have to use the other types, which are best saved for those whose requirements are more specific, such as the O groups.

>> No.4693659

Even if there isn't a shortage of your blood type, they'll still use it. They can also filter the red cells from your blood... your health authority probably does this all the time. (Where I live, we don't even have separate clinics.)

do so - and do not forget that your blood is not only used for emergencies but also for research and production. So I prefer going to the red cross station and donate for free. I know they will make some money with it, but the red cross knows best what to do with that money. Better than a private, profit-oriented firm, where the money will go to some owner's new ferrari.

Why would you donate free blood? It's not like the system prefers donors when they need blood, and if you don't get paid, what's in it for you? Why give up the time and blood for nothing in return?

Because it saves lives.
It is a good thing to do if you care about other humans, and it is selfless; we do not do it for profit.
A small amount of patience and discomfort for one person, can save another persons life.

It is worthwhile.

Giving blood every few months or so is healthy for your body.

Not quite, but it is not unhealthy either.
The effect is neutral for the giver.

Each time you give blood, you remove some of the iron it contains. High blood iron levels, can increase the risk of heart disease. Iron has been shown to speed the oxidation of cholesterol, a process thought to increase the damage to arteries that ultimately leads to cardiovascular disease.

Doctors have long suspected that blood iron levels help explain why a mans risk of heart disease begins earlier than a womans. Women lose blood and lower their iron levels each time they menstruate. Men, on the other hand, begin storing iron in body tissues starting in their twenties, which is just about the time their heart attack danger begins to climb.

You would not still be alive without the help of other humans.
We all depend on each other, and we should all play our part.

The iron is in the red blood cells I think, and these are replaced in the weeks proceeding your blood donation.
I have not heard of a link between blood donors being at less risk of heart attacks.
Do you have a citation please?

On the subject, I've donated my blood and now have a fancy card saying I'm A+. How the fuck do they know that? for what I remember in highschool, you don't exhibit the resus factor until you receive blood for the first time. So Is my memory shitty/Was my teacher shitty or do they have a secret technique?

it's an antigen, just like the ABO system, they can screen for it when you give blood

One of my University lecturers was investing in a company that filtered usable proteins and such, from reject blood. So, No. I will not be donating money to that faggot.
