Sup /sci/,
Current undergrad student at a CC in the USA, planning to pursue to a bioengineering/biomedical engineering degree. How's the schooling at a University? Any advice you can give me?
I'm looking to get in to research, in particular research with DNA/Gene's. What are the name of groups doing such research on a global scale?

I'd think you would just get involved with research at whatever university you end up going to.

Anyone who graduates either as biomedical scientist or bio-engineer with a master (PhD) in cell/gene technology goes into that kind of research. Or you could become a biochemist, with a great knowledge and research field on DNA/Gene macrostructure.

Way too broad, man. Look at the research groups in schools you want to transfer to and read up on what they do.

Biomedical Engineering at my Uni basically teaches you how to build medical equipment like EKGs and you have to take classes to learn how they work.

Basically Freshman/Sophmore classes are the same as a bio/chem/pre-professional student and then you diverge into heavy mathematics and engineering classes.

I'm pre-med and knew a bioengineering kid in a chem lab so its just the gist of what I heard from him.

>> No.4692700

Biomedical engineering is more focused on the design, construction and application of medical equipment, the course I'm doing covers genetic technologies and diagnostics, but only briefly. I'd look more at a degree in biochemistry, as others have said.

Biomedical courses are just watered down versions of EE, ME, and ChemE classes. When you look for a job, you WILL be overlooked for a proven engineering discipline major.

quit now while you have the chance

Pretty much this. I did one of those less established engineering degrees and I soon realized it wasnt a good choice. What you will find is that not only will you be overlooked for people who did ME and EE but you will be stuck only looking for jobs in your niche while the EEs and MEs can get jobs in any field. I was able to get a job in my field with networking and luck but I wouldnt bet on being as lucky as I was.
