This is substitution; you are substituting what 8y equals for 8y

substitution you are meant to manipulate one equation to get y = something

and then replace y in the other equation with that something

you did this for 8y, not y.

oh I fucking love TAFE's tertiary preparation course. I barely attended my final two years of school, so I was doing shitty in everything except for maths and physics since I learned that by myself. I just left school at the start of Yr. 12 and did the TAFE tertiary preparation course instead of the HSC. It was easy as balls so I'm proud of myself :)

But anyway, you look like you used the elimination method. For the substitution method, you just solve for x or y in one of the equations, plug that in to the other equation to get x=n or y=n, and then plug that back into the other equation and you'll have the intersection coordinates.

Never learned probability theory, but I'd just put a twiddle symbol over the chi so I don't get it confused with x whenever I actually use the letter chi. I've got it all planned out.
