Hey /sci/
I don't visit here often, and am enrolling into college this fall. I figured this would be the place to go on 4chan for some good "personal job" stories since my chosen major as of right now is Chemical Engineering. I was wondering, if any of you are Chemical Engineers, are you satisfied with your job? What's it like? Are you happy? I am aware there are multiple occupations with this major, so tell me about yours!

Well, consider that most people toil away unsuccessfully at something. These aren't the regrets of Nobel prize winners. You can work your ass off and be satisfied.

Yes Caucasian person Taiwan...
They have an island devoted to people smarter than mainland Chinese and foreigners, it is the island of kill people that come here and bother us and these are our pet foreigners and they can stay because we love robots...
Also I don't do the research for you if you are going into basically biotech or chemical engineering then you would work either in a plant making schematics and elixirs or hiding in the back making tranny drugs or meth or pretending to be a smart white person in the front so Falun Gong leaves everyone alone...
There are more than one island and they are very tolerant and the only reason that mainland doesn't like them is that not all of the citizens can go, because of the unique mix of the population and because of the mainlands racist attitudes towards minority's...Whites are minority's there...
Umbrella Corporation...

You can can find a plethora of information about Che E on youtube. There is even a mini documentary that interviews numerous folk about their jobs and what they do day to day.
This professor is also really cool if you are looking to see what an intro class looks like. Listen and actually pay attention to the talks for the first few. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgWNQVdhE9A

Really most engineers you meet fall into that category. In college probably most of the grad students I met said something to the effect of "well it's a good career and good money, but I don't know if I really like it"

>top universities in Taiwan offer free master's education to foreigners

Seems to good to be true. Probably a ploy to kill people that bother them.

>full tuition paid

You already said it was free.

>monthly living allowance (plus tip)

How much? Some colleges here in the US do that, but it's lower than minimum wage and you can't do much with it.

>get nearer to north Asians (sucks being in the monkey south, we all look like monkeys)

Work on that self-confidence.

>dat Taiwanese pussy

Fair enough.
>could learn Cantonese and Mandarin in my 2 years there (that would look delicious on my resume, assuming China controls the world in the next 5 years)

>implying the Chinese won't economically collapse when the US/UK/EU does thus losing their monopoly over McDonald's toys.

Those mite b cool.

>China controls the world in the next 5 years

That will never happen. The West has been afraid of China since at least a century. The thing you have to understand, is that China is completely dependent on the West to do anything. We fuel their economy, and with the simple fact that computers are American (no one is any real competition to Microsoft and Intel), they probably can't even work without us.

Well, i have older friends who went there. They say the allowance is enough. Just enough to live comfortably, so you don't have to have a job unless you need extra money for bitches and blow.

My life choice right now is basically to start working or ditch that 2 years of work experience and get a master's degree.

I was hoping that once I get the master's degree, I can easily (and instantly) migrate to glorious US and get a job at 50k starting at least.

Please tell me my dreams will come true.

I was clearly exaggerating. I know that is unlikely. But my point was Mandarin and Cantonese on my resume would look good since the US is always doing business with China. Well at least that's what I believe. I'm probably wrong.

Also, not really related but it's really tense here in South-east Asia right now. China is taking control of islands in Philippine waters and the Philippine government is asking for help from the US. I believe they don't have an army there in the Phils or something and like a single, decades-old war plane.

There's a good possibility. Though you'll have to deal with our naturalization system, which is clunky to say the least, so forget that whole "instantly" bit. Kinda weird how our immigration system works (had to write a paper on it once.) but the time it takes to complete differs based on if you have family here, if you're marrying an American, what sort of education you have, your gender, how many children you have, etc etc etc. IIRC mostly there's a 5 year waiting period for the whole thing, and the test(s) themselves are actually pretty easy. You just have to memorize trivial things like "Which president signed the New Deal?" or "How many senators are assigned to each state?"

Honestly I still have problems with it, but that's what you're looking at if you want to lawfully immigrate over here. If you want to be an illegal you're probably not going to be able to peruse anything scientific, much less have your schooling/experience recognized by people here.

Ok, if you want to maybe bring the thread back to the original subject, I have a question: I plan on going into ChE (finishing up freshman year now), but in the long term I really want to go into drugs/curing diseases. Is ChE a good route to take to that, especially as a good job backup if I don't succeed in making it that far?

Sorry OP.
Well, when I was applying for colleges, I really wanted to be a chemical engineer because I met this really cool guy and I wanted to be cool like him. (friend of a friend)
I thought chemical engineering was the coolest thing ever. I don't even know any other majors. (I didn't know fuck shit about college back then) But I got a scholarship (plus allowance) for physics so I said fuck it and took that.
Eventually, when taking Chem 1 (which was required for most science students), I realized I really really hate Chemistry. I was all memorization and shit.
Eventually, I transferred to Electronics engineering and I loved it! That's what I wanted to do with my life, designing, simulating, creating hardware, etc.

Looking back, I couldn't imagine doing chemistry ever.

Don't ask me man, arbitrary waiting period. Hell, if you're male, without a wife or child, and have no useful skills, they can out-right refuse you. The real bitch of it? You have to be *in* the US to begin the wait period.

In any case, I'd still look into specifics and whatnot before you quote me on everything. I don't know a bunch of details with the system, just general facts.

No, when you express interest in being naturalized you're considered "on visa", like a student visa or a business visa.

I hate to be the asshole here man :c

In any case; I'm sure you'll do fine man, if you're really hot stuff with your education then your (American) employer will probably help you through the whole process, again, do your own research, there could be a lot I'm leaving out.

Meanwhile, I have to work my ass of to even be on the waiting list.
