why aren't you a quant/studying to be a quant?

Being a quant means selling your abilities to a soulless husk, who will making far more money than you do from your own work.

>> No.4648855

I work in a hedge fund.

Those salaries are bullshit and vastly inflated (as well as the ones you'll find on the Wilmott jobs board). Quants (at IBs) earn fuck all (well, not really - but they earn fuck all in banker terms) as a starting salary - and the same applies to all back-office finance jobs.

IBs are a dead end in the finance world anyway; the real money (and everyone in finance is in it for the money no matter what we might say - you think we'd work 90+ hour weeks because we enjoy the mundane maths behind it?) is in buyout shops and hedge funds.

Jobs in finance are repetitive, painful and boring as hell (maybe quants are not so boring, but still, you'll be over 40 when you'll reach the interesting part). Also, prepare to work >80h a week. Those, who get 300k usually works 100h a week. That's the same as 120k working normal 40h week. Not so much, actually. There are far, far better ways to spend life.

>> No.4648913

I seriously doubt the validity of those jobs you posted OP... just saying, they seem sketchy.

Besides, I love what I do and am happy with the money I make even as a lowly PhD. student. I love my work, do contract stuff related to my field on the side for extra money, live with my gf, have a cool dog, lots of hobbies, etc. I feel rich right now.

Expensive toys, trying to make strangers/neighbors jelly, or living in a big city doesn't appeal to me. Besides, talking about your "potential future income" is ridiculous.

Those jobs sound terribly boring...

I thought the point of education was to hone your abstract thought, make you a better person, etc.? Not get boners over your fantasy projected income.

I know it is because most of them are undergrads or highschoolers, but too much of /sci/ revolves around this "I'm going to make $300k because I just finished my first year in math" or university rankings. If you worry about this a lot, you aren't an intellectual.

Few, if anyone, on this board could land a job like that. First off, they typically require social prowess and second off, in order to even get an interview you would have had to gone to a top school.

>> No.4649881

Contrary to popular belief, not everyone in finance hates their job. Most investment bankers do, the same goes for back-office guys. However, lots of traders really enjoy what they do. I work at a proprietary trading firm, and almost everyone of the traders here genuinely enjoy the work. Some to the point that they hate weekends and other days when the markets are closed. Of course, I get a boner when the bonus rolls in, but I'd probably stay in this line of work even if I earned 1/5 of what I make now.

>> No.4649928

I used to want to and I learnt advanced probability/stochastic calculus/financial engineering because of it.

Now I see it's dull, doesn't benefit society and isn't as likely to make you a millionaire as it first seems.

These days I just want to do something fun. I don't really spend much money anyway.

Because OP, someday you will find there are more important things in life than making money, like being satisfied with your work, having a personal life, or making a difference in the world. I'm not saying that it wouldn't be a fulfilling job for you, but it wouldn't be for me, and I'm sure most of /sci/ wouldn't be happy either if they were stuck using their skills for some massive banking company.

>>4650092

Yeah this is okay I guess. But I'd still rather do a job that directly effects some positive change in the world if I had the choice. Even if it's just making a small advance in some technology or putting a smile on people's faces.

Scientists are only able to work on unprofitable research because society allow it. Don't bite the hand that feeds you, respect the environment that allows you to exist.

Though I'm sure you're not a scientist anyway. I can't imagine someone who says things like "fuck mankind" would be very good at working with others.

What's wrong with wanting to earn as much money as possible? Have people gone completely retarded lately? Isn't it fuckin' IMPLICIT in the definition of liking that one strives for a job one likes, one way or the other?! You're fuck all without a stable income in today's world so financial consciousness is anything else but inappropriate. If one's expenses are too big one will have to make compromises with regards to the quality of the job. I really can't stand hearing those "money is not everything" platitudes anymore.

Today's world? What are you implying?

There's more welfare in today's world than there ever was. People are more free to pursue things they enjoy in the western world today than at any other point in space time. Almost every job provides a more than liveable income.

Troll. Happy PhD students don't exist.

More realistic: you want to kill yourself after every TA session. You're essentially paid minimum wage to do bitch work for professors just so you can finally graduate and become unemployed. You're not respected by society when they realize that you're not a "real doctor".
