Ingrown toenail.

Why the fuck does this happen?

Why haven't we evolved to grow out toenails in the right direction?

>> No.4599861

Because you cut the nail too short.

So fucking what? Why does this change the direction of where the toenail grows?

I cut my toenails short so I get ingrown toenails, there's nothing like the smell of a tiny piece of tissue that you've kept under your toenail as it slowly collects puss

Evolution does not produce forms that are perfect. It produces forms that are good enough.
Also, we ancestrally didn't clip nails; rather, nails would just wear down and/or break during daily life. Since ingrown nails are associated with nail clipping, there would have been no evolutionary pressure involving ingrown nails.

Fuck off, EK. I use my trip to provide useful information related to geology, evolutionary biology, and paleontology. You use yours to spread your worthless personality.

Not too mention an ingrown toenail isn't particularly life threatening so it wouldn't have much of an effect on evolution

Not having an infection is an advantage over having an infection. Evolution cares for more than just life threatening traits.

No it doesn't.

If it doesn't harm your chances of reproducing successfully and those offspring surviving, etc., it doesn't matter.

Did you know that elephants die of starvation? Once their teeth wear down, they just die slowly of starvation. And why shouldn't they? If they were going to reproduce, they had done it already.

You are unlikely to die from an ingrown toenail, sure. But being caught and eaten by a lion because an ingrown toenail makes running harder and more painful? THAT would have been a legitimate danger.
There's a famous Allosaurus specimen, affectionately dubbed "Big Al", that probably died from a broken toe. Because of the relatively minor injury, it wasn't able to hunt.
Just saying, you need to consider the wider implications.

Um, evolution DOES "care" about more than life-threatening traits. An individual that can survive well in its environment but is sterile will not be passing its genes on! Remember, sterility is not life-threatening.
Also, humans and porpoises are the only known animals in which the females significantly outlive their reproductive span. Why do you think women live so long after menopause? Where's the evolutionary advantage in that? (It's a neat little puzzler if you're curious.)

You can get rid of your toenails.

There is some kind of gel a doctor subscribes. You put it on the nail, it softens it, till you can just scratch it all off.

Shoes, cutting your toenails instead of letting them be worn out.
In other words, we get ingrown nails because we don't live as we would do in the wild.

if you were a wild human, with no understanding in medicine, and you nail hurt horribly and was infected, you could decide to rip it off - and it might have worked.
