Sherlock wasted his talents and has been poorly betrayed in both literature and the media. The real Sherlock probably wasn't anywhere near as smart as TV/book Sherlock. It happens ALL the freaking time. Look at any movie based on someone, they're betrayed in a much more positive light and their faults are downplayed majorly. Odds are, he was just a pretty good detective who earned a reputation as a mysterious recluse due to his high functioning autism.
