seriously, beer arguing with someone like about 10 minutes about this, the answer is clearly 9, a I right or what?

It's not really a matter of stupidity but more a confusion over the game of application of symbolic operators.

Some people don't realize that division and multiplication functions are on the same "application level" and that to break the tie one "scans" the equation from left to right.

Instead of being dismissive, just explain these rules as common scientific and mathematical usage and you'll gain a "sage" respect.

The answer is "Real math doesn't use the symbol <span class="math">\div[/spoiler], and there's a reason for it."
Any other answer is wrong.

The non-dot multiplication has priorty over the / in most calculator, in that case the answer is 1. It's just a matter of convention.

That would be argument from authority, a fallacy. What you posted is not true because you are math major, but because you performed the operations in compliance with their defined order of priority.

Isn't the order of operations/pemdas just the arbitrarily agreed upon method? I didn't think there was anything deeper to understand than "because that's just it was decided upon to do it."

>> No.4566847

>>4566803
in some sense it's just arbitrary notation, yes

one should understand though, that the addition and subtraction has equal priority because they are the same operation. subtraction is addition with the additive inverse of an element.
a - b = a + (-b) where -b is notation for the additive inverse to b.
as such, subtraction does not exist as a binary operation of it's own

same with multiplication and division

>> No.4566850

>>4566825
That's because Randall Munroe fucked the question up. From the internet:
>Think of words ending in "-gry". "Angry" and "hungry" are two of them. There are only three words in "the English language." What is the third word?
