are animals conscious of their mortality? Explain.

I once witnessed a dog commit suicide. It looked sick, thin, and it hung it's head low, and moved with slow deliberate motions. It had that thousand yard stare. I sat there and watched it stand by a highway watching for cars to pass, and when one came along, the dog walked strait out in front of it. The first two drivers had quick reflexes, and missed the animal. The third one didn't. I know anecdotal evidence isn't much, but it's at least a reason to wonder on the issue...

They are when they're dying. Before then, how can they know death if they've never see anything die?

Similarly, how can they know their reflection if they've never seen it?

They know enough to avoid certain situations that will cause pain and injury, but I wouldn't say that they are aware of the concept of death itself.
