Those forums are there for scientific, academic and intellectual enhancement only. Maybe 4chan has skewed your sense of forums, but not all have a sense of dry humor.

If you think stack exchange is bad, it's counterpart(for Grad students, professors and postdocs) is pretty stoic. They once tried to have a thread on humor, but it was immediately flagged and taken down. Those websites are strictly for those interested in academic pursuits and nothing more.

What you said may as well have been said in Greek, for /sci/tards are economic morons. They never understood economics and never will. All they want to do is play with tech like a kid does in a sandbox.

I come to /sci/ to raise my blood pressure at how fucking stupid /sci/heads really about about real life. That's all. I get off on pwng them all the time, largely about how economics makes 99% of their science dreams impossible. Daily I lick their salty tears.

In the beginning, /sci/ was pretty rad.

I used to have weekly quizzes with Calc I, II and III questions just for fun. Brain teasers for the ones who were really good. To include those who weren't in Calculus just yet, I'd put up algebra equations or Pre-calc based material they could answer. Other people in the thread started asking questions on group theory, analysis, etc. I doubt anyone remembers these threads(this was in the 1st and 2nd wks of /sci/), but I used a Yotsuba picture. We also had someone on /sci/ going over Logic; physics discussions were actually discussed with, you know, some actual MATH. We didn't have any IQ threads up or anything of the sort until later on. There was/is ChemGuy who is, quite possibly, the most knowledgeable chemist on /sci/. I literally do not know why he lurks here sometimes; he is too good to be on /sci/. I've yet to see him ever wrong on any subject dealing with Chemistry or Biochemistry. He's a monster.

EK came soon after. Afterward, a slew of people came in; some good, but most horrible. Some people correlate EK's arrival with the descent of /sci/, but she just came around the same time it started to descend. I was one of the few people who started 'hating' on EK, but I only did it for fun and it was meant to be a joke. In all fairness, though, EK would say a lot of dumb shit or recommend wrong solutions to problems which she had no experience in. She was good in certain HW threads and liked to chat up stuff, but she was inexperienced in many fields of mathematics, physics, probability, etc. Harriet, her counterpart, was/is much smarter.

People try starting decent threads, but they get railroaded by shitty posters or they're buried underneath the mess of other horrible posts.

You should do that again. I think I tried something like it a while back and got barely any interest, but if we do this properly it might work.

Now I think about it, there was one point at which we tried to survey omegle to find out if people knew what would happen if you let go of a bowling ball on the moon. I set up a spreadsheet, we got around 50 responses, then that died as well.

To be completely honest I think EK/harriet/blackman/etc were our downfall. Not that there was all that far to fall from magnets, geusses and 300k starting

The shitposting tripfags, while being annoying, are only a minor factor in /sci/'s downfall. They come like once a day and derail one or two off-topic threads. No big deal. The real problem is the existence and the huge number of off-topic threads. Two years ago /sci/ was full of interesting discussions. The occasional religion troll or theory/geuss thread was amusing at best. Right now it seems like for the last few months we have been raided by career advice, homework and philosophy posters.

EK made 11,000 posts on !EKFNQ,,, before she ragequit, I think she messed things up just by being so active and disagreeable. There were a few days when every thread on the front page was about doxxing her and I really wouldn't consider that kind of thing minor.

Also is /sci/ really 2 years old? that sounds wrong.

There are people here who aren't under aged, but haven't been exposed to mathematics in a while. Every now and again, we get posts from people who are CC students or older adults who haven't been to Uni in quite some time. As such, their mathematical skills are lacking.

The original aim consisted of merely providing slight brain teasers to a variety of people from all backgrounds. The daily putnam thread, for example, excludes an enormous amount of individuals of /sci/ because not everyone can answer them. I love the Putnam threads and it was a good idea the mod(moot or someone else) decided to sticky a question everyday. It's just that not everyone can get involved. Also, the quiz threads I made contained questions from other higher-level math fields as I stated previously.

>> No.4548199

That's not so easy to make. How can we have a "discussion" on undergrad math stuff? No one would be willing to give an entire lecture. And then we have these arrogant or even malicious undergrads who know the (basic) stuff and would troll the shit out of a thread that they find too low level.

>> No.4548200

>>4548191
Yes, and interesting discussions on other science topics too. The "what are you researching" threads were always cool.

I know most people are against the homework threads, but they're more on topic than the philosophy threads to be honest. If the problem is sufficiently challenging its fun to solve and you learn tactics from others.

/x/ has a good janitor. He instantly deletes threads that are too far off-topic. Sadly this doesn't make a significant difference in the board's quality. The problem is not the number of mods or janitors. We have enough of them and they have plenty of time. There are other reasons why certain kinds of rule violations are tolerated despite reports. As stated above it would be infeasible to keep up /sci/ for a bunch of like maximum 50 educated aspies and to ban thousands of underage users for this purpose.

I agree with this. There's a huge dilemma with this, though:
Not enough people are adept in these fields to partake in those threads. As you can tell from the past few months, more than half of the denizens of /sci/ aren't that experienced in those sub-fields of Math. This isn't a good or bad thing in particular, but that's the way it is.

Also, this is 4chan after all. If someone gets a blatantly wrong answer or someone provides a wrong proof, people are swift to disrespect them. Also, egotistical posters who feel that they are the absolute best and everyone else is subpar.

This isn't actually that hard to remedy. Like in /vg/ or old /v/ generals, recurring threads tend to develop their own community. If the threads are started and disrespectful people aren't tolerated, eventually trolls will ignore the thread for the most part and it will become better than the rest of /sci/. The best way I can think of to make it decent for a wider audience would be to post a couple different questions/discussion topics in the OP intended for people of different levels of understanding.

Allegedly they share the same IP. If one of them gets banned, they are both banned. And there's lots of evidence. You usually see her getting banned by observing that all of her posts get deleted. When a few minutes later she comes back, it seems highly doubtful that she appealed her ban and it was lifted.

Sounds good to me.

Google docs spreadsheets have an option for form input, if we wanted to make things better (ie not have everyone copying the first guy to answer) maybe we could give people a link and get them to fill in their responses.

oh, also: If you're going to do this I strongly recommend you upload the answer in some obfuscated form before hand so it's possible to show you aren't just using /sci/ to do your school work. Put the answer in a .zip with a password, upload it and link to it in OP, and you're golden.

If you want to help make /sci/ better, try emailing moot with intelligent well thought out emails, on the state of /sci/ and needing mods, repeatedly.
He actually does read most of his emails but he rarely replies. He may not respond or fix anything immediately but a fix in 6 months is better than no fix at all.
