First parenthesis.
Then multiplication and division, associated to the left.
Then addition and subtraction, associated to to the left.
18 - 9 + 2 = 9 + 2 = 11
18 / 9 * 2 = 2 * 2 = 4

Multiplication and division have equal priority, but parentheses come first.
(consider that dividing by 0.2 is the same as multiplying by 5. It is exactly the same thing, just that a different function is used, so they must have equal priority.)

Follow BIDMAS, and other than that, read from left to right.

Multiplication/division hold equal precedence because they are the inverse of one another and must do. Addition/subtraction also hold equal precedence because they are the opposite of one another and must do.

6/2=6*2^-1. So by your idea of Multiplication being before division, the answer is now 3(1+2)

The actual answer is that linear notation sucks and that the question is ambiguous and improperly bracketed.

I agree with EK. The expression to the right has superfluous parenthesis that weren't in the original expression. The expression to the left is more intuitively and mathematically correct, clearly shown by EK's quite justified complaint, and it should become obvious to anybody after a little thought. If you hadn't added the parenthesis to the right, you'd have seen it as clear as day.

It's not a question of following a rule and reading it as text from one side to the other. The question is that unless clearly specified, you don't assume things are in a denominator, at all. For you to put groups of things inside an operator, you NEED to use parenthesis

So that whole (1+2) is on the numerator. For it to be on the denominator the expression would have to read 6/(2(1+2)). Notice the big parenthesis there.

This also means that sin2x is NOT supposed to be interpreted as sin(2x). It's (sin2) * x. If you want it to mean sin(2x) you have to CLEARLY specify it

But ellipses are more clear to most people - when pemdas is introduced, it is usually when you still are using an X for "times", so that prevents ambiguity. The problem with OP post is that it is mixing "elementary school notation" - <span class="math">\times \div[/spoiler] - with the notation that replaces it when you get to prealgebra, consisting of fractions for division, and putting things next to each other (possibly with parentheses) for multiplication.
