4452049 No.4452049 [Reply] [Original]

So I sometimes saw these mathematic guideline pics here and so wanted to make a less serious and also more exhaustive picture for a while now.
I finally got around doing it (and it turned out to be a whole lot more work than I though it would be. PS: if there are typos, not I might still be able to update them)

So please, have some OC

That pic is fucking retarded. Half of those things are not required.

Half of those things are pure mathematics concepts which theoretical physics scientists do NOT need. You need linear algebra and differential equations + some other smaller concepts based on what area you're working on.

ah, fuck my life.
but thanks for pointing it out, I changed it.

I never intended it to be an info graphic, but I guess it can be seen as one. I started writing down math topics and at one point I wanted to transform it to a pic. I also enjoyed the little challenge of writing a scrip which let you write down the words in this disk manner. The colors are a little flashy, but without it would be unsorted. Believe me, I tried.

I mean, if you have a wider range of mathematical fields to study that increases your chance of actually contributing to something. If you only had a few areas of studying most of them would be covered by top mathematicians and there would be fewer room for the average folk.

Plus, it only keeps things more interesting as more discoveries are made when there are more fields.

would you say contributing to mathematics is in any case superior to learning it?
I mean what I want to say is that its not only fulfilling if you discover someting new.
Otherwise, even most of the mathematicans wouldn't do much.

What really tends to depress me is that it often seems that only people who know famous people seem to do great stuff.
I read somewhere that >90% of the people, who won a noble price in physics already worked with someone, who had one.

>would you say contributing to mathematics is in any case superior to learning it?

While learning is obviously very important one should also aim in making contributions to one's field, but i guess that's only if you want to be a researcher.

>What really tends to depress me is that it often seems that only people who know famous people seem to do great stuff
>great stuff

Thinking the point of studying mathematics/physics is to become a nobel laureate or a field's medal winner or to discover a big stuff might discourage from learning mathematics/physics so you should avoid that line of thought.

>do you learn category theory for (functonal?) programming sake?

I guess not. I don't know much about it but it's an interesting subject if you want to (say) be a theoretical computer scientist.
