Psychologists say that willpower is finite and that exercising one's willpower only makes it harder to do it again later. I think that is bunk, but then again I've never respected the field of psychology much.

Personally, I've found that if I indulge myself then I'm even more likely to indulge myself later. The more accustomed I become with comforts the less willing I am to give them up. It stands to reason that exercising my willpower as often as I can will improve my ability to do so again, the desired acts become more or less habitual.

What is /sci/'s two cents?

The studies you might be referring to are on short-term effects, where extreme exertion of self-control or being stressed decreases your ability to maintain control (short-term).

But long term, yeah, people who never say "no" to an internal impulse won't have the ability to say "no".

>fucking glucose levels, how do they work?!?!

>> No.4442626

I'm thinking about testing my theory.

I will buy a large bag of Peanut M&M's, which I like so much that I tell friends and family to never to give lots of them to me because I'd eat them within a day, and set it write on my desk. I may even open it for ease of access. I will then resist the urge to eat them as long as possible. If my theory holds then other willpower intensive tasks such as exercising, eating right, and getting work done should become easier with time.

If I'm wrong then I get a bang of Peanut M&M's, so that's cool too.

Willpower intensive acts deplete glucose, but that doesn't necessarily mean that raising or lowering glucose through one's diet significantly affects one's willpower.

You're confusing short term and long term. Exercising your muscles makes you tired in the short term, and stronger in the long term. It turns out will power works in a similar way.
