Do scientists in the USA use the metric system?

I was just on Khan Academy (as per the sticky) and they keep giving me inches/feet/miles as measurements, then ask me to convert into inches/feet/miles. What's the point of working with such ridiculous units/conversions in base 10?

>> No.4387985

Physicists/engineers might because of convention, but I'll tell you that as a chemistry major, everything is SI.

Alright, thanks.

>> No.4388006

Britain doesn't use the metric system, you fucking idiot.

>> No.4388012

YES. yes yes yes. Only idiots use whatever the fuck the american system is called... imperial? Or some shit. I hate that fucking system with the intensity of a thousand suns.

replace "ridiculous" with "inconvenient to calculate in my head"

I still agree.

>> No.4388019

Contrary to what /sci/ would like you to believe, the metric and imperial systems are not something strictly divided across borders. Different industries and areas will use different systems which transcends nationality.

Shipping containers, which are used world wide on roads, ships and trains, are measured in Twenty foot units, which by extension means everything related to shipping, including packaging and product design has to take that into account.

>> No.4388034

I don't give a fuck how inconvenient our system is, the wizarding community in Harry Potter uses feet and inches. So there.

>> No.4388045

we only have inches as a dirty marketing trick to confuse the customer.
"oh you have a 42 inch tv? How wide is it? "
"I have no idea"

>> No.4388054

Engineerfag. We still learn the imperial system just in case, but our classes are mostly in SI. Physics classes are totally in SI

>> No.4388084

Scientific calculation in the U.S. is almost always done in metric raw data sometimes either comes in Imperial units either because it is easier to visualize than metric or because the data is for a class assignment and the instructor wants you to practice unit conversion.

wow I should have spell checked that

easier to visualize oh god what? its only what your brought up with, i can visualize a meter or centimeter pretty dam well

You want a fun one. Sulfuric acid production around the world is measured in long tons. Make sense of that.

>> No.4388490

>>4388470
I didn't know about long tons. Amusingly enough, it's closer to 1Ki(kg) than to 1k(kg).

You use metric. People need to stop confusing SI with metric. SI blows worse than Imperial. Units like the litre and torr are only tacitly accepted because scientists refused to stop using them. In reality metric is no more standardized than imperial, the scaling is just easier. Both are pretty messy systems.

>confusing SI with metric

Seven SI base units:
meter,
kilogram,
second,
ampere,
kelvin,
mole,
candela.

>> No.4388557

teachers stop using the U.S custom system in high school. So when we are learning biology, chemistry, and physics we are very familiar with metric and especially in college. we use metric for math and science but custom for everyday and reference.

>> No.4388562

As a mechanical engineering student I work with, US customary, English and SI

>> No.4388565

I can confirm this. I have never seen imperial units in anything involving chemistry.

Not enough data. Is the 42" screen size or frame? And what is the aspect ratio?

It's easier for someone who have grown up with the imperial units.

That's the point.

Inches is one of the dirty marketing ticks.
Not all of them.

we only use american standard measurements at the grocery store, but we practice conversion for buildings.

Let me guess, you live somewhere in europe?

There are 12 inches in a foot, because we are so 2012.

We freely mix and match metric and imperial, even on road signs. It's all part of a vast conspiracy to confuse foreigners.
