Astronomy is big in china at the moment with the construction of the worlds largest radio telescope and their first astronomical space mission.

A lot of foreign academics have been brought in and many are based in Hong Kong so to separate it them the government. Chinese isn't a requirement, I've been to conferences in China and Chinese academics are pretty much like our academics.

Immersion is the best way. If you can't live in China then just work at Panda Express or some shit. Learn from topics you like；if you like science but hate politics then don't learn grammar from political articles but focus on the sciences ones to keep interest. Study for at least a couple hours every day, I suggest Pimsleur. Find a Chinese girlfriend.
