What are the benefits of devoting yourself to an intellectual life over a physical one?

i.e excel in powerlifting, martial arts, athletics...or, excel in brainy science stuff...

You help humanity in the progression towards a better existence, for one.

This is not true. Without physics and computer science we wouldn't have modern technology. Without chemistry we would not have inorganic materials to support this.

This.

The two are complementary not conflicting. Look up the greatest minds in history: Eratosthenes, Da Vinci et al.

Now stop being a whiny faggot and make something useful out of yourself. You have a hard life as Astrophysicist-Space-marine ahead of you, be to prepare for it while you still have chance.

is mostly the same.
if you are good here come the $$.
with money here come the women, respect and everything.
being a good athlete or sportsman will give you fans, respect, joy, love even without money. same goes if you are a good intellectual.
you will love to have a run/do sport the same way you'll enjoy a good book.
BUT...
only an intellectual really create wealth, new ideas, make the humanity progress.
a famous sportsman can only act like a sponsor for intellectual movements, but also some famous intellectual have the same possibilities that way.

You don't have to spend hours in the gym to stay /fit/.

Just retain enough /fit/ness so that you would be able to kill 99% of the population with your bare hands (not that hard when you consider most of those are poor Indians).

you can argue about that.
being able to share information on the internet is prosperity. being able to visit my parents 300km away with car is prosperity.books are prosperity. being able to play videogames is still prosperity.
being able to produce more food with less hours/man is prosperity.
of course medicine is the most direct of the science. knowoledge-> apply knowoledge to heal=prosperity.
while for engineering you have knowoledge-> apply knowoledge to build object-> the use of the object will give prosperity.

Our society isn't about being a hunter-gatherer or warrior any more, it's about providing goods and services and manipulating money.

You're in a better position to take advantage of our society if you are well-educated and intelligent than if you're strong, on average.

Yes, but you can't get someone significantly stronger than you into a choke hold. you probably won't be in a position like that to begin with though (we guns and missiles now etc.). Humans are a lot more animalistic than most of us would like to believe, you receive a lot more respect and consideration form everyone based on your looks alone, it's sad, but true. Also there's the benefits in intellectual prowess and health you have to consider, but you don't need weights or a gym to get decent strength/benefits, the Greeks sure as hell didn't use them (even the Spartans trained mainly with Calisthenic methods).

Well yes, but again, why can't you do both? If you take a close look at 500 CEO's, they are all tall, /fit/ and handsome, having a decent education and reasonable fluid intelligence is certainly more important, but you can always cut a little time from your sci-fi and 4chan browsing to get into a better shape (you can't study all the time, unless you were born with God-tier concentration(read: Aspie)).

Once you become a CEO of a massive company it's a lot easier to get a personal trainer.

Really, making sure your education and qualifications are impressive is more important than doing 5 mile runs and lifting weights.

>> No.4361395

because the sense of sheer wonder and awesomeness that comes with exploring and understanding our world will always far outstrip any amount of awesomeness that I might personally achieve via physical training.

On a personal level, the sense of excitement that can be had by learning organic/physical chemistry.. the very nature of reality's fabric, including myself, will not only be directly rewarding, but facilitate my side-quest for a strong, fit body (nutrition, mechanics of muscle contraction, understanding necessity for neuro-muscular integration for optimal workout, half-lives of stress hormones and organizing a routine around peaked androgens... not to mention the mental discipline required to stick to a routine)

both is definitely better, of course.. but a strong mind sets you up for a strong body better than vice versa.

We could argue about this all day, and while I agree with you that physical fitness is less important education, it shouldn't be neglected altogether; a common trend among MODERN [I cannot emphasize enough that this is only a recent development] technical students.

[I wrote several more paragraphs, but decided to delete it instead, have a nice day.]

>> No.4361503

-Contributes more to humanity.
-Easier to make money.
-Your body degrades while you age. Your mind doesn't, or at least at a much slower pace (unless you have some kind of mental disease).
-If you excel at your job, you could actually have some significance in history and be remembered after you die. Professional athletes are hardly remembered.

>> No.4361505

Not that I could have become any sort of professional athlete anyway, but the reason why I dedicated my life to academics early on was because I had a genuine interest in science: in animals; in how the universe worked; in the human body; etc.

As I went through into high school and college, I realized that dedicating my life to biomedical research was worthwhile because I could make a worthwhile contribution to the alleviation of human suffering. Had I have devoted my life to athletics, my contributions to society would have been, principally, of entertainment.

Still, that doesn't change the fact that I will never shun physical endeavors. I guess one of the (few) nice things about grad school is that I can show up to my lab at 10 in the morning, so I can exercise every day before work without getting up at some ridiculous hour.

>> No.4361619

Only childish high school nerds that are picked on by jocks don't dedicate atleast 4 hours out of a week to keeping in shape. To say that you can only be intellectually or physically fit with no middle ground is horribly naive, to the point that you simplify life to D&D classes.
