Thread about relations of science and Christianity.

Religion and science go hand in hand. Strong faith can be a powerful incentive to increase your effort in doing research. Every scientific theory just gives more insight in the beauty of God's creation.

i never understood the argument "stop asking questions how it works"

i mean, what does the existance of god have to do with my interest of how things work?

>> No.4360292

Being religious doesn't really have to come in the way of scientific research, as long as it's the right religion. I.e., not Islam.

>> No.4360293

I'm not an atheist, but I'm not a Christian either (or a theist). I guess that means I'm free to shit up this thread.

More seriously, I grant that religion and science *can be* compatible. This, however, depends on religion not making stupid claims about the natural world that contradict science. Therefore it entails the abandonment of some doctrines that exist in Christianity (or most other existing religions). Are you a bad enough dude to throw away false doctrines?

No it isn't, because atheism is disbelief in God while theism is positive belief in *an interventionist God.* Those who believe in God, but not that God meddles in the affairs of the world fall between the cracks and are called "deist."

>> No.4360308

They usually coexist fine, as long as the scientists are making discoveries that benefit the religious in some way. That is, until they're making discoveries that expose the bullshit claims of said religions, then they get all up in science's grill. Curious that this never happens in the reverse.

>> No.4360316

>>4360300
This right here. The placebo effect shows how much affect believing in something none effective can have. You can be given a calcium carbonate pill, be told it's cancer medication and recover.

Science is dichotomous to religion, one is the lack of faith without evidence, the other faith despite evidence. People that play scientist while believing in the judeochristian god are decieving themselves.

If you say 'they just don't believe the rediculous stuff' then you are missing the point, they are scripture, the stories of Lot's wife becoming a pillar of salt is true if the genesis myth is true.

You can't cherry pick from your own holy book.

You can believe in a god if you are a scientist, if you can't reconcile the math and implications in your mind then believing in a god that started it all is fine, but christianity is not compatible with science.

Atheism is a lack of a belief in any god. If you can't honestly say "God definitely exists," you are an atheist.

This is also wrong. Theism is a belief in any god. The nature of that god is irrelevant.

I don't want to have this pointless debate over semantics. If I called myself atheist or theist it would only promote confusion, because it would be against the common definitions of those words. The only reason words have definitions in the first place is to allow communication of meaning. Maybe from etymology it would seem that "theist" and "atheist" should be mutually exhaustive, but it isn't so in common parlance.

All that said, guess what? I'm going to go on calling myself a deist and you can suck my cock. How's that?

>> No.4360325

The "atheists" posting ITT are not really atheist. An atheist would say "A religion thread? Hey, I don't care." and would simply igonre it. Those posting their wild attacks here are nothing but religion haters, people who didn't manage to fully give up religion and are still emotionally struggeling. For whatever reason they need to put a lot of aggression in a pointless issue like the one discussed ITT. As an atheist I am ashamed of these guys calling themselves "atheist" and giving the simple non-belief the bad reputation of pseudo-religious fanatism.

1.) Most current atheists are ex-Christians
2.) Brainwashing is a dubious idea that has never been confirmed to be real
3.) Anecdotally, whenever someone is said to be "brainwashed" it's almost always just an idle insult or a way to fallaciously dismiss that person's POV

If you are brought up by your parents who tell you that god exists, you believe them, children are incapable of seperating fantasy from reality and are often unable to comprehend what a lie is. Childrens minds are pliable, that is why it is possible to teach them, they believe whatever you tell them. So parents bringing their child up believing in god are brainwashing them to believe in something without proof, now if we used that concept in a legal system we would be fucked.

Belief in "magic" is not a valid point of view, IT IS A FUCKING MENTAL DISORDER. Christians shouldn't be given a fucking pass, they should be locked up in mental institutions.

As a society we need to stop giving validity TO FUCKING RETARDED "points of view" and just call them out for the bullshit they are.

People abandon beliefs they held as children all the time. Are people forever "brainwashed" to believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny? Furthermore, children lie all the time, so I find it hard to believe that they don't understand lying when you've presented no evidence. That's the common thread here, you assert all this stuff about brainwashing but there's no evidence for any of it. "Brainwashing" is considered a derelict concept in psychology.

They abandon beliefs because they take into consideration what society says on the issue.

If society said that Santa Clause was real, most adults would believe that Santa is real. The only reason they're are so many "christians" is because society reinforces that fucked up fantasy.

You're prevaricating about the reason they should be considered "brainwashed." Perhaps you could start by providing evidence why we should consider the entire idea of brainwashing to be valid instead of a load of hogwash.

>> No.4360362

>>4360351
Does santa exist? No. Do children believe he exists? Yes whole heartedly, they put letters up their chimney for him, every day in the run up to christmas their belief is reinforced, with pictures of him, people telling you stories about him, you can even go an meet him at the mall and sit on his knee. Then you grow up, you lose nothing from finding out the truth, if you don't believe in santa you don't get burnt in hell for all eternity, he will still bring you presents if he does exist and you are good. Now this process of reinforcement is so much stronger for believing in god. Every sunday you go to a building that is the biggest most decorated building you know, and in there all the people in town worship god, every night you pray to him, if you don't believe you suffer for all eternity.

The reason we get over Santa and the Easter bunny is that we have the support of those around us to teach us that they aren't real, that we aren't going to suffer eternal when we stop believing.

I am advocating compassion. Christians need mental help, and should get it. With enough people working on the problem, maybe there will even be a "cure" to christianity one day. I would love to see the day that these "chirstians" can be cured, and finally become productive, fully functioning members of society.

We will never get a cure, unless we admit there is a problem. Have you no compassion? How can you stand by while people live with this affliction everyday?

I could just post the same link back to you, since there are perspectives in the article that dismiss brainwashing. Also note that the development of the idea of brainwashing has been closely associated with at least two separate moral panics (instances of social hysteria) in the red scare and the anti-cult phenomenon of the 80s. Social science unfortunately sometimes serves as the handmaiden of the status quo, whatever that may be at the time.
