Unfortunately, the school system does a good job of bucketing kids and railroading them through the same exact program one by one. It's hard to do calculus so early because they simply won't let you progress that fast. It requires effort outside the system, and people tend to whack those outside the system.

OP here, I'm not saying I'm the smartest kid there
I know for a fact one chick who is smarter than me in my calc class. I'm just saying I'll be studying in the library or before one of my classes in the hall and every time someone sees my calc book they go into "U R GEENEEUS" mode and tell me how smart I am.

I think it's been said in this thread but it's the fact that if you're good at math or take an interest in it you're automatically labeled a "genius" or a "nerd" (depending on what level of education you're talking about and who you're talking to)

I would like to think that if most people didn't have an irrational fear or math that everyone could pass a calculus class. Shit, even when I was in trig and I looked in someone's calc book I was a little scared (dat limit notation looks like a moonspeak if you don't know what it means) but I knew when I came to it I could learn it. And I have.

the human body has a natural protection against self-harm and suicidal acts. it's actually been studied that being to kill oneself is one of the hardest things for any creature to perform, and it's common for most suicides to have multiple failures prior to it. it's also why cutting oneself is common for people who plan to kill themselves, it slowly eases their body into getting used to self-harm

We had a student at the high school I worked at for my masters degree like that, had to be moved here because the school found out that he was trying to kill himself, and didn't have the necessary programs to deal with it, and we did. So they put him in fragile behavioral courses here with other kids we got for similar issues: self-cutters, kids who commit felonies, underagers straight from rehab, kids like that. As a result, they had to put them on a modified diploma instead of a standard one, which doesn't include SAT and ACT, so graduates under it will have to go through community college before just regular college. And the kid, the suicidal one from the other school, was definitely the smartest guy in the entire school, one of the most intelligent people you'll ever meet, just plagued by some family drama, and had to go to community college once he graduated. Which was kind of sad seeing somebody that smart being forced into that kind of situation because of personal crap, but I'm sure he managed. Last I heard regarding him was that a family member of his shot themselves recently, but nothing about him, so I don't know what he's up to now, if anything.
