It's a fascinating history subject that can't be elaborated upon with just words and speculations from people in an ivory tower. There have been lots of studies on Africa on its crops, animals, environment, geography, etc., but with a lack of written history, we can't learn much.

Personally, I think that sub sahara Africa was, as Darwin said, content. But now that we've sent it out of its stability, new ideas from all over the world can be introduced to the African population. From what I've observed, the people there just want to live out a steady life like all the 'normals' in 1st world societies. They don't have enough passion to organize a revolution, but they don't need to. All they need is an intelligent leader to utilize their power in numbers to achieve what he/she wants. The people have been domesticated by drugs, religion and poverty, but are split by stupid warlords. I think it would be cool to just play with Africa and see how it would deal with its dark age. Man, that place has so much potential for history, but there are so many conflicting interests there that it can't be organized.

There are too many flaws with The Bell Curve and most of the existing race research on intelligence. The effect of the environment is usually discounted or mathematically adjusted for in some way in these studies.

We do have clear evidence, however, that even over short periods of time, environmental changes can have a large impact on learning.

Furthermore, the research on stereotype threat shows that subtle biases can affect performance as well. We used to think that women weren't as smart as men, however, more recent research and data (e.g., graduation rates) are proving that incorrect.

I suspect that there's a genetic difference when it comes to intelligence, but that difference is grossly inflated. It's probably along the lines of a 5 point difference if people have the same environment, advantages, prejudices, etc.

The easier attack on "race is a social construct" is to go the athletic (rather than the academic) route. Collect all sorts of data on blacks vs. non-blacks in sports: The percentage of NBA players who are black, the 100m gold medal winners, etc. I think your professor will be hard pressed to answer why a social construct seems to matter so much in realm that is objectively measured and has a long history across all cultures (i.e., sports has a revered position in society everywhere, not just among African cultures).

From there you could ask if there is a physical difference in muscles based on race, might there not be a differences in brains based on race...

The irony is that you're agreeing with the bell curve and the general racial views of Charles Murray. No researchers seriously believes the differences are 100% genetic. When controlling for European admixture, African Americans average around 80, while Africans average 65-70. There is clearly environmental variables, such as nutrition and cognitive stimuli, which accounts for the variance between the two groups. Now is the African American/White American gap mostly genetic in origin? There is solid arguments for both sides, but due to the fact that when controlling for ethnicity and gender, mild mean group IQ differences with physical features, like height, physical attractiveness, eye color, hair color, skull size, etc (usually around 3-8 points), it can be concluded with near certainty that there are some relevant psychological differences between races just because they "look different".

Believe it or not, no it's not. There's an oddly benign attitude amongst the community (mostly blacks older than 30) that just being able to obtain a college degree in general is a great accomplishment.
