Just a question, you have a mechatronics background or it's just mechanical engineering? I mean, not formally speaking, but since one of the possible jobs after mechanical engineering is actually robotics, do you have a background of electronic engineering/computer engineering yet by doing mechanical engineering?

Or you are interested mainly in the "hardware" and not at all in circuitry/software (let's say AI) ?

>do you have a background of electronic engineering/computer engineering yet by doing mechanical engineering?
Every (OK, most) engineering disciplines will have an EE and CE background (I actually have a class called "Electrical Engineering" this year for example) that they gained during their first 2 years, MechE's at my uni have a lot of specializations that they can choose from starting from their 3rd year onward including AeroE, MechatronicsE, NuclearE, Robotics etc. Even if your school doesn't have an undergrad specialization like that, you can easily do MechaE in grad school with a bachelors in MechE or EE.

Get a lab job that I enjoy. Preferably research in genetics or neurobiology. Microbiology is pretty neat too.

Emphasis on research as well... I want to help contribute to the knowledge base. I just started a county microbiology lab internship the other day. While it's good experience and all, it's pretty much just routine testing and quality control, making sure people dont fuckin die. Good mission and all that, plus since they are govt funded they get any kind of lab equipment they request on a dime. But there's not really any potential for exploring new ideas or fields or subjects that interest me. Good for short term and some lab experience, but wouldn't want to make it a career.

Not sure how I feel about academia either. Might go for a masters and try out some companies that do research first.
