Hey /sci/ britfag here. I will be applying in September to Universities and a point that always sticks is how you should have plenty of extra-curricular activities. I do plenty of things outside of school but none of them are relevant to the courses that I will be applying to (physics). Does anyone here have any ideas of what I could do or have any experiences with this sort of thing that would be useful.

Thanks in advance

Nothing stands out on an application like:
burned down my parents' house/garage in the pursuit of knowledge

bumping to see if anyone has any other ideas

I had FUCK ALL in terms of extra cirricular activites for my application, applying for physics courses.

Luckily, I did do 2 weeks worth of work experience at a physics deparment in a Uni in London. Bigged that up massively (it was pretty good anyway) and it was the filler for my app.

It doesn't matter if they're relevant, i put the air cadets, 3d modelling, kayaking... not really sure what else.

Just show them you aren't going to be the type who does nothing else and burns out after 2 years.

perhaps take up amateur astronomy, astronomy in general is a good course to go with physics. If you know how to work a telescope you can end up doing outreach and get an in with the academics for stuff lie summer projects.

ahh cheers, yeah i already do a fair amount outside school i just wanted to see if i could take up something more relevant.
>take up amateur astronomy
this might be worth trying, living in london i get a lot of light pollution but its defo worth checking out

thats pretty sweet. Did you just write to the uni asking for work experience or did you know someone?

If your in London the best thing to do will be to join an astronomy club, you won't immediately need a telescope before you know what's what and you can get transportation to star-parties in some darker surroundings but you'd be surprised what you can see from the middle of the city.

What area do you live in and how old are you + have you retaken any sixth form years (i'm right in guessing you're in year 12 right? There might be some astronomy clubs which you could join.

If you can do an extended project (if your school/whatever offers it) or just generally read around a subject and mention an interest in it, mention some books you read and found interesting. I'd suggest doing something like this http://uksdc.org/but it's probably already too late.
