Hey, /sci/. What can you guys tell me about Telomeres? I know only the basic idea of what their practical use is, but what should I know?
I met a scientist who actually works with them and is self-experimenting with them. He works with nobel laurietes so hes legit.

I just feel like I'm going to come off like a retard that doesnt know what hes talking about.

Bumping with relevant things.

Every time a cell in your body duplicates itself, it has to duplicate its DNA. Every time it duplicates its DNA, little by little, it shaves off part of the DNA strands. Over time, it shaves off too much and starts to affect the function of the cell. Telomeres are segments of DNA that serve as "caps" and protect the functional DNA.

So we want to lengthen these caps to prevent damage?
But by lengthening them, it can cause cancer?

there are sum animals that naturally repair it, ive never heard the cancer thing.

I see. Are human trials dangerous?

One of the characteristics of cancer cells is the upregulation of telomerases.

What would someone who works in this field of study be addressed as? Molecular Genetecist?

Depends on what aspect their studying. There's a number of approaches you could take from bunch of disciplines, and they would have their own title

Is there anything engineering related?
I'd like to go into aerospace engineering, but if this guy can hook me up and get me acquainted with the community of biological engineers (sounds catchy doesn't it?) then I would definitely go for it.

left-brain'dness and right-brain'dness is an outdated scientific theory, people aren't really left or right brained and while sections of the brain are to some degree more "generally creative" or "generally logical", it's pretty insignificant and definitely not segregated into a right and left

While it may (or may not be) right or left brained, the main concept remains the same. Logic and creativity are two different sides of two different one sided coins.

yea there essentially opposites but that people are either a logical person or a creative person

This.
Females generally use the creative side more than males do, while us males generally use the logical side more than our inferior counterparts.

Lengthening/regenerating telomeres is a key component of cancer. It didn't really surprise scientists to find out that upregulation of telomerase (lengthens telomeres) in adult somatic cells sharply increased incidence of cancer in animal trials.
