I figure this is the place where most of the working-class engineers would congregate.

Is engineering boring or is it fun? What the fuck do you guys do?

i studied mechanical engineering but my job is in software mostly. it's pretty fun, but i think i lucked out honestly... most mechE shit seems kinda boring.

>> No.4214844

I'm a research engineer currently working at Nova Chemicals in Calgary, formerly worked at Coanda Research in greater Vancouver. I'm a double-alumnus of UBC in mech, and my masters thesis was on dynamic stall in flapping wing flight. My experience is quite unlike most line engineers, however. My research interests are in unsteady fluid mechanics at low Reynolds numbers, however since starting work at Nova I've been the guy with expertise in quantitative laser-based flow measurements (PIV, PTV, PLIF, etc). I usually work on the instrumentation, data acquisition, and post-processing (including custom software development) for measurements for harsh environments such as turbo-machinery and reactors.

I have a lot of fun with it. I've always had a strong interest in aerospace since I was a kid staring at planes and rockets on the Discovery Channel, and fluid mechanics was an extension of that. But you really need to have a strong interest in what you're doing. If you don't like engineering, and you just want a good paying job with good stability, I suppose it wouldn't be so dry that you couldn't put up with it and live for the weekends. But really, don't waste your time like that.
