The Higgs field is some seriously messed up science (at least, in my opinion). Where did it come from? Is there any experimental evidence to support its existence? Obviously, there's some sort of mechanism (or combination thereof) that provides particles with mass and unifies the weak force with electromagnetism, but just from some simple reasoning I cannot for the life of me wrap my head around how and why a Higgs scalar field works.

I'm not trying to call bullshit on the Higgs Boson, but it just doesn't seem fathomable. Why does it work, and why aren't there any other models that come close to it?

When you actually know the standard model, and QTF, then you get to fucking speak. Until then you have no fucking idea what you are talking about.

The answers to the questions you seek, require you know alot of shit to begin with.

How old are you? How much physics do you know?
How about you delete this shit thread and make a new one, just asking people to please explain basic physics concepts to you. That would be better for you.

I'm completely aware of what the 'Higgs Field' is, are you? I've taken remedial undergrad courses on QFT.

You consider the electroweak lagrangian 'basic'? Hah.

Lol.

I specifically commented:

Note the keyword:
>Obviously
Are you able to read?

The Higgs field was proposed as a literal brute force tactic of the inclusion of masses into the wave equation of the W and Z vector quanta destroying the underlying lie group gauge symmetry. Mainstream physicists loved it as it allowed a convenient method of renormalization, which gave rise to accurate predictions of the W/Z masses before experimentally measured. There's countless other models that make these predictions (formulated later) without the use of scalar fields. I fail to comprehend your reasoning behind the belief that they are anyhow not good or acceptable candidates as we have had <span class="math">not~a~single~hint[/spoiler] of experimental evidence suggesting towards the Higgs field since the '80s. What is your problem?

And there are other models, string theory is one famous one, though no doubt you'd find that even more absurd

This is supposedly a "science and math" board. The global rules dictate against trolling, flaming, spamming, macros, and low quality posts. There's a putnam qod pinned on the front page. I was expecting at least partial politeness and rational conversation henceforth, but that apparently is not the case.

How does String Theory argue against the Higgs Mechanism? It actively supports it. It was shaped around it, for the most part. What the hell are you babbling about?

Congratulations. You have just learned that this is a board for science fans, not scientists. Scientific discussion is far from the norm here.

>> No.4207596

can't we just admit that energy itself creates mass, as einstein stipulates, and that all particles are just bound energy through gravity - as intense energy itself propensates its own gravity.

then we still have to explain the mechanism of gravity, but we don't understand gravity anyways so we're still at ground zero.

socratic method. Instead of putzing around things you don't know as fact through stipulation, admit you don't know anything.

OP, you are in the wrong place. Nobody on this board are going to be able to help you. Whenever anybody asks a legit non-elementary physics question on this board, it gets shot down incredibly fast, most of the time accompanied by phrases such as "you wouldn't understand anyway" to conceal ignorance.

I wish you the best of luck on another board or forum that isn't filled to the brim with self-righteous retards.

I admit to knowing little to nothing about the Higgs Boson/field. I'm a senior in high school, and I've just read "The Fabric of the Cosmos" by Brian Greene. Could someone explain this shit to me? I understand there needs to be something that gives particles mass, but I agree with OP, it's reminiscent of the aether that vitiated theoretical physics prior to experimental evidence determining it didn't exist. It just seems so damn haphazard.

Inb4 I can't understand it. State the facts and I'll make that call.

I understand many of you, as stated in the aforementioned post, are butthurt antisocial aspies who never got girlfriends. That's fine; don't take it out on me or OP. I'm not a fucking physicist. I intend to become one, but for now, I need your help.

Thank you.

And thank you OP.
