Hey /sci/, hope you're all enjoying the holidays.

So, I'm traveling with an undergraduate research group to my first scientific conference in a few weeks and I was wondering if you guys could give me some idea of what to expect - what kind of events are there, things to do, etc... and if anyone who's been to a conference would like to share some of their experiences that'd be great too.

Thanks.

Image not in the least bit related.

If you have interesting and relevant things to discuss with someone there do, otherwise don't say anything. Don't hang around people waiting to ask them something and don't be clingy. If you really want to ask a question during a seminar don't ask for clarification or further explanation (you can read the paper for that), do ask about further research/ potential impact/ personal stance but don't force a question. If you've got a good one fine otherwise shut it.
This may seem like im killing any fun/learning you may have had but what you need to realise that as an undergraduate your sole purpose there is to impress and network, you can do nether if you look like a dick.

But on a lighter note try to be interesting and likeable, if there is anyone there who does linked (or sort of linked) research ask question and discuss your research. Try to be memorable and try to get into a situation where they actually want you to email further details. it can get you noticed for your research and noticed by your group for networking.
and try to go to dinner with someone interesting but only if your not a third wheel.

We're all in a group working under one of the professors here. One of the 4th years in our group is presenting a poster for his own project at the conference and a couple of us (along with the professor) are going with him.
