"Death is certain, replacing both the siren-song of Paradise and the dread of Hell. Life on this earth, with all its mystery and beauty and pain, is then to be lived far more intensely: we stumble and get up, we are sad, confident, insecure, feel loneliness and joy and love. There is nothing more; but I want nothing more."

- Christopher Hitchens (1949-2011)

Very powerful speaker.

Only John Lennox was good enough to overpower him.

Respect.
RIP.

I'm suprised Christians haven't tried to claim this already yet, we won't have to wait long.

I heard he converted so Satanism. He is now a powerful demon that goes around kidnapping and killing christian boys and girls.

HE IS MY FUCKING HERO!
How can I serve you my dark Lord!

>> No.4166062

I don't see why whether or not he converted is important.

He was only human, therefore he was scared. Approaching death may have made him convert, but what difference does that make?

Or are you saying that a true atheist wouldn't convert?
Which means you're saying true atheists do not feel fear.

An NY Times columnist already has:

Yeah, he did.

Brilliant debate though, watch it on youtube.

John Lennox is, by far, the smartest Christian in the media: Professor of Mathematics at Oxford, speaks six languages fluently, has two PhDs and masters degress in maths, Biochemistry and Mathematics.

It's the issue of being hypocritical. It doesn't matter in the context of his message, only his integrity; something important for an icon, an archetype.

So?

Can you blame him for being scared of dying? Or, in his head, that he might go to Hell when he died.

I've watched it. What part specifically do you feel wins the day?

>Professor of Mathematics at Oxford, speaks six languages fluently, has two PhDs and masters degress in maths, Biochemistry and Mathematics.

irrelevant.

>he's good at math, therefore he's right about god

No.

that's benedict XVI, idiot.

I haven't said anything about what I think about it. I'm just saying *why* it matters. The greatest of us, regardless of what they're great at, are held as bastions of integrity for whatever message they promote. Him converting would be betraying his position.

Personally, I wouldn't besmirch him for being human, but I wouldn't be happy if he did convert. None of this matters though as, from what I've seen, he didn't convert so past hypotheticals this discussion is pointless.

I think he's getting at an issue of category. If I remember correctly Christian is the overall term for Protestants, Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, etc.

>The letter also dismissed the notion of a possible deathbed conversion, in which he claimed that "redemption and supernatural deliverance appears even more hollow and artificial to me than it did before."

>Which means you're saying true atheists do not feel fear.
We do, but apparently not as overwhelmingly as religious people.

>> No.4166217

Idiots being afraid of dying =/= deathbed conversion.

He stated multiple times, he is not afraid of death. He is afraid of dying and the manner which that may come about. Example becoming senile I completely agree would be a state to be feared. No-one wants to wither away and end in a carehome.

But he never said he was afraid of death itself.
